Warriors Rumors: Quinn Cook, Golden State Nearing Contract Extension
The Golden State Warriors and point guard Quinn Cook are reportedly "nearing agreement" on a multiyear contract, according to Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania.
ESPN's Chris Haynes and Marc J. Spears first reported Cook and the Warriors were in serious discussions on a deal that will be fully guaranteed for the remainder of this season and the entire 2018-19 campaign.
The Warriors initially signed Cook to a two-way contract on October 17. That move flew under the radar at the time, but it's proved to be a lifesaver as point guard Stephen Curry has been banged up over the past month-plus with ankle and knee injuries.
In March, the Duke product appeared in 14 games, including 10 starts, and averaged 13.2 points and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 49.0 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from three.
The highlight of that run came on March 29, when Cook dropped a career-high 30 points in a 116-107 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.
"It doesn't surprise me at all what Quinn's doing," head coach Steve Kerr said, according to NBC Bay Area's Monte Poole. "We watched him in the G League all year, lighting it up. We watched him in practice here; he’s one of our best shooters. And all of a sudden he’s playing 40 minutes? This is what he can do."
Considering Kerr has already ruled Curry out for the first round of the playoffs with a Grade 2 MCL sprain, Cook will likely be the team's starting floor general when the postseason begins next weekend.
According to Haynes and Spears, Cooks "is expected to be the first player in history to turn a two-way contract into postseason invite."
