Canelo Alvarez Has Official Complaint Filed by NAC over Failed Drug Tests
In the ongoing saga of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's failed drug tests, the Nevada Athletic Commission has filed an official complaint against the boxer.
Per MMA Fighting's Marc Raimondi, NAC executive director Bob Bennett issued a statement saying the complaint against Alvarez was filed after the organization's investigation into his two failed drug tests was completed.
"After completing my investigation, I made the determination to file a complaint against Mr. Alvarez and set the matter for a disciplinary hearing during the Commission's regularly scheduled meeting on April 18th," Bennett wrote in his statement. "Therefore, I am cancelling the hearing that was scheduled for Friday, March 30th."
The situation has left the status of Alvarez's scheduled rematch with Gennady Golovkin on May 5 in Las Vegas in doubt.
The Nevada Athletic Commission issued a temporary suspension to Alvarez on March 23.
Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol during a random drug test issued by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association as part of the deal for his rematch with Golovkin.
Per George Willis of the New York Post, the World Anti-Doping Agency said the levels of clenbuterol in Alvarez's test were "consistent with meat contamination that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico in recent years."
Alvarez and Golovkin fought to a split draw in their first fight last September.
