Jon Gruden Says He'd Like to Eliminate Instant Replay to Improve NFL
Technology has given sports leagues around the world an opportunity to correct their mistakes through the power of replay, and after spending nine years in the booth for Monday Night Football, new Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden would like to see the NFL make a drastic change.
"I'd like to eliminate instant replay, honestly," Gruden said, per Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "That would be my No. 1 thing. Let the officials call the game. That's just my opinion. I try not to play that game of 'wish-list,' you know what I mean?"
There's no doubt that replay has the ability to overturn an egregious blown call. However, modern technology can be both a blessing and a curse, at least to this coach.

"I think slow-mo replay is the biggest problem with replay," Gruden said. "When you're looking at is it a catch or isn't it a catch at that speed it's hard to tell. So I think if you threw that slow-mo out, I think you'd get back to common sense. Let the naked eye determine some of these calls. But it always looks like pass interference when you're going that slow; it always seems to look a little bit more dramatic in slow motion."
Some mistakes can be corrected after just one replay. On the other hand, there are some plays in which there just isn't enough indisputable evidence to overturn the call on the field—but it often takes a lengthy review to reach that point. That can kill the flow of a game.
Of course, replay doesn't guarantee perfect outcomes. Controversies still arise—just ask Dallas Cowboys fans.
Gruden is a self-proclaimed old-school coach. While seemingly everyone else wants as much information as possible at their disposal, he appears to believe less is more when it comes to football.
