Doug Pederson on Nick Foles Trade Rumors: 'Nothing Too Crazy' Offered to Eagles

Kyle NewportMar 24, 2018

Having the reigning Super Bowl MVP on the roster as a backup seemingly gave the Philadelphia Eagles a valuable trade asset to dangle this offseason. And yet, Nick Foles remains an Eagle as March nears an end.

That's because the team never received an offer it deemed worthy of giving up a proven backup quarterback for. Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson revealed as much at the NFL's annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday.

"Nothing too crazy," Pederson told NFL Network's Steve Wyche (h/t Edward Lewis of NFL.com). "It had to be the right deal for us to do that. But there wasn't anything coming down our way for Nick."

This past season, Foles filled in when Carson Wentz went down in December, leading the franchise to its first Super Bowl championship. He completed just 56.4 percent of his passes while throwing for 537 yards and five touchdowns in seven regular-season games.

When everything was on the line, however, he was at his best. He completed 72.6 percent of his passes for 971 yards and six touchdowns in three postseason contests, including a 373-yard, three-touchdown performance in Super Bowl LII.

The Eagles do not have to trade Foles. With its starter on the road back from a torn ACL, the team would be wise to have a quarterback it can count on if Wentz hits a rehab snag. Foles, per Spotrac, has a base salary of $4 million in 2018, making him a bargain for Pederson and Co.

Of course, if all things go well for the Eagles, Foles will not have to take a snap. That makes him an expendable asset, but losing him would require the team to find a new backup. Former sixth-round pick Nate Sudfeld is the only other passer on the roster.

It's possible Philadelphia fields more offers between now and the April 26-28 draft. If the team feels comfortable with a deal, it can send Foles on his way for the right price. If an acceptable offer never presents itself, the Eagles can hold their ground and enter the 2018 season knowing their quarterback situation is in good hands.
