Brandon Scherff's Contract Option Reportedly Picked Up by Redskins

The Washington Redskins picked up the fifth-year contract option on guard Brandon Scherff's rookie deal Monday, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB.  

Selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft, Scherff has become a staple on Washington's offensive line. The 6'5", 319-pound guard has started all but two games in his career, missing a pair last campaign because of a midseason MCL sprain.

It was a no-brainer for the team to pick up Scherff's option. He has been selected to back-to-back Pro Bowls, with two-time Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley—who last played in 2012—calling Scherff the best guard in the league on his ESPN 980 program last October (h/t the Washington Post).

Washington head coach Jay Gruden was complimentary of the lineman during last season, per Rich Tandler of NBC Sports: "He's reacting. He's anticipating. He's pulling. He's pass-blocking. He's run-blocking. He's double-teaming. He's doing everything you want him to do out in screens, out in space. He's the best guard out in space by far in this league. It's fun to watch him."

There are some who don't believe teams should draft offensive linemen in the top five picks. However, the key to a productive offense is a good offensive line—and Scherff has rewarded Washington for using a high selection on him.
