Miz vs. Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins and WrestleMania's Best Triple Threats Ever

Mike ChiariApr 8, 2018

The Miz, Finn Balor and Seth Rollins did battle in a highly entertaining Triple Threat match for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 34 on Sunday in New Orleans.

Rollins prevailed as IC champion, but all three competitors turned in strong performances on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Balor appeared to have the match won after hitting the Coup de Grace on The Miz. But Rollins intervened and delivered the Blackout to Balor, with Balor's head hitting The Miz's back. Rollins then hit the Blackout on Miz before the incumbent champion could get to his feet, which was enough to secure the win.

While singles matches tend to stand the test of time more so than those involving multiple Superstars, there is a rich history of Triple Threats at WrestleMania.

The battle between Miz, Balor and Rollins was among the best. However, here is a closer look at three others that managed to top it.

Chris Benoit vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania 20)

When eliminating tag team Triple Threats from contention since the bouts between Edge and Christian, The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz at WrestleMania 2000 and WrestleMania X-Seven reside in another stratosphere, the greatest Triple Threat in WrestleMania history took place at the 20th anniversary of the event.

Very few WrestleManias have ended with anything other than a singles match, but WrestleMania 20 closed with Triple H attempting to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against best friend Shawn Michaels and Royal Rumble winner Chris Benoit.

The dynamic within the match was special since Triple H and Michaels were already well-established top guys, while Benoit was still trying to get to the top of the mountain after many years in the business.

There was an organic groundswell of support behind The Rabid Wolverine and an arena full of people who wanted to see him get his moment on the WrestleMania stage.

The match itself was nearly 25 minutes of back-and-forth action with tons of near-falls, and it garnered Benoit plenty of face sympathy since Triple H and HBK double-teamed him at various points.

In the waning moments of the match, Benoit countered a Pedigree into a Crippler Crossface, and with Michaels incapacitated outside the ring, The Game was forced to tap out.

Benoit became a world champion for the first time in WWE, and his win helped close WrestleMania 20 with the ultimate feel-good moment.

After retaining the WWE Championship earlier in the night, Eddie Guerrero came to the ring to celebrate with his close friend as confetti rained down in Madison Square Garden.

Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton vs. Batista (WrestleMania 30)

Ten years after WrestleMania 20, WWE looked to catch lightning in a bottle again by closing the show with a Triple Threat.

The circumstance was slightly different, though, since it wasn't known which Superstar would complete the triumvirate entering the night.

While the match was originally slated to be WWE world heavyweight champion Randy Orton defending against Royal Rumble winner Batista, fan pressure prompted Triple H to announced that he would face Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania with the winner getting inserted into the title match to make it a Triple Threat.

Bryan beat The King of Kings in the opening match on the card, but his shoulder was in bad shape following a post-match attack at the hands of Triple H.

Even so, the leader of the Yes Movement went up against two former Evolution members in hopes of winning the title at The Showcase of the Immortals.

Similarly to Benoit at WrestleMania 20, Bryan was at a disadvantage since Orton and Batista tried to work together on a number of occasions.

Ego got in the way, though, which prompted The Viper and The Animal to mix it up as well.

Also, Triple H tried to ruin Bryan's night again by bringing out crooked referee Scott Armstrong and attempting to hit Bryan with a sledgehammer, but Bryan staved everyone off.

His pursuit of the championship appeared to come to an end when Orton and Batista hit a combination Batista Bomb and RKO on Bryan through the announce table, which led to him being stretchered away.

Bryan somehow got back into the match, though, and forced Batista to tap to the Yes Lock, which made him the new WWE world heavyweight champion.

The entire Superdome engaged in the "Yes" chant while confetti poured on Bryan during his career-defining moment.

Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Jericho (WrestleMania 2000)

WrestleMania 2000 was the only WrestleMania without a normal singles match on the entire card, and it was the Triple Threat for the Intercontinental and European Championships that arguably stole the show.

Kurt Angle entered the show as the IC and European champion, but he was placed into a unique situation that would see him defend both titles.

The Triple Threat was a two-fall affair with the Intercontinental Championship being on the line in the first fall and the European Championship being up for grabs in the second fall.

Benoit became the new IC champion when he pinned Y2J after a diving head-butt, which left Angle in a position where he could only salvage the European title.

He was unable to leave WrestleMania with that belt in tow either, however, as Jericho pinned The Crippler after a Lionsault to win the European Championship.

That meant Angle lost both championships without figuring into either fall.

Angle didn't garner much sympathy from the fans since he was a heel, but it played perfectly into his character since it gave him an opportunity to whine and complain, while the fans showered him with "You suck" chants in the subsequent weeks and months.

Although the Triple Threat lasted for less than 14 minutes, it was a memorable match between arguably three of the greatest in-ring workers of all time.

It could have been even more special had it been given five more minutes, but Benoit, Angle and Jericho unquestionably put on one of the greatest WrestleMania Triple Threats of all time regardless.
