Rangers' Rougned Odor Placed on 10-Day DL; Hamstring Injury Diagnosed as Strain

Timothy RappApr 10, 2018

Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor is out of action after suffering a hamstring injury during Monday's 8-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels

Per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Odor has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

The injury occurred in the first inning when Odor was going back to first base to avoid being doubled up after Elvis Andrus popped out. He pulled up short of the bag and was examined by the medical staff before being removed from the game.

Odor, 24, had a breakout campaign in 2016, hitting .271 with 33 home runs, 88 RBI and 89 runs in 150 games. He had his struggles in the 2017 campaign, hitting just .204 on the year and striking out 162 times, though he still bashed 30 homers and 75 RBI while playing in all 162 games.

That durability was a plus last year, with his latest injury interrupting what has been an impressive streak of consecutive games for the infielder. But Odor acknowledged he needed to cut down on the strikeouts and improve his batting average in 2018.

"I don't think I hit the way I'm supposed to hit, and I know I'm better than the way I played last year," he said in February, per Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telegram. "But it's part of baseball. I always think about the positive stuff. I never think about the negative."

Odor was quick to point out that the six-year, $49.5 million contract extension he signed in March 2017 didn't play a factor in his disappointing 2017, however.

"I didn't feel pressure when I had no contract, so why am I going to feel pressure when I have the contract?" he noted. "I wasn't the same. But I already talked to them about that, and I'm going to play the way I play."

The Rangers will be hoping he can get back into the lineup to play the way he plays sooner rather than later, as Odor remains a key building block for the Rangers. Jurickson Profar is taking over at second base for Tuesday's game against the Angels.
