Liverpool Transfer News: Latest on Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah Contract Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenFeb 18, 2018

Liverpool will reportedly try to lock star forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to new long-term contracts, with the Senegal international first in line for a pay raise.

According to the Sunday People's Neil Moxley, the Reds have taken note of the rising wages on the open market, and they will follow suit before some of their top stars have the chance to complain.

Mane currently earns £80,000 per week, according to the report, and with three years left on his contract, time is not an issue. He signed his deal in 2016, however―one year earlier than Salah―which explains why he's at the front of the queue.

The former Southampton man could double his wages, a reward for the great form he has shown of late. The 25-year-old has already bagged six goals in just five UEFA Champions League appearances, including a hat-trick against FC Porto in midweek.

Per OptaJoe, it was a rare feat:

Salah's new deal should be even less pressing, as the Egypt international only joined the club last summer. The former Chelsea man has been a smash hit at Anfield, however, which in turn has led to some early transfer speculation.

As reported by MailOnline's Sam McEvoy, the president of the Egyptian Football Association is convinced Real Madrid will make an approach during the summer as they look to solve their La Liga scoring issues.

Salah has been in sensational form all year, with 22 Premier League goals already. His scoring touch isn't just a case of good form, either, as he previously had a fantastic record at AS Roma.

He has no intention of slowing down, either:

Liverpool sold star midfielder Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January, concluding a lengthy transfer saga that ended with a seemingly inevitable exit.

The Reds haven't been regarded as an elite club in Europe for some time, and in order to change that perception, they have to increase their wage structure and keep hold of their best players.

The funds from the Coutinho sale―£143 million, per Moxley―should help pay for Mane's and Salah's new deals and will likely also be used to strengthen the team in the summer. The Reds didn't make major additions in midfield or attack in January but did splash the cash on defender Virgil van Dijk.
