2009 Heisman Trophy Odds Watch Week 8
Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy remain the front-runners in the Heisman race after each of their squads escaped with narrow victories last week.
Tim Tebow – Florida Gators
(see latest Heisman Odds)
Tebow was able to lead a game-winning drive in the final minutes of last week’s 23-20 victory over Arkansas. However, the Gators are now the 2nd-ranked team in this week’s AP poll, after the close win as a 24-point favorite. Tebow did pass for 255 yards against the Razorbacks while adding 69 yards on the ground. He is fourth in the nation in passing efficiency. Tebow has fired eight touchdown passes this season with just a pair of interceptions. He has passed for at least 30 touchdowns in each of the last two years. Tebow has rushed for 378 yards with five scoring runs. Tebow and the Gators are favored by more than three touchdowns again for this week’s matchup at Mississippi State.
Colt McCoy – Texas Longhorns
(see latest Heisman Odds)
Like Tebow, McCoy’s numbers are down from a year ago but the success of his team could be enough of a boost to win the Heisman. McCoy passed for only 127 yards against Oklahoma but the Longhorns pulled out a 16-13 victory to remain undefeated. He has 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in the 2009 campaign. In 2008, McCoy delivered 34 TD strikes with only eight interceptions. He has thrown at least one interception in all six Texas games this season. His next showcase game will be in two weeks at 15th-ranked Oklahoma State.
Mark Ingram – Alabama Crimson Tide
(see latest Heisman Odds)
The sophomore running back has jumped into the Heisman race after a huge effort last week. Ingram rushed for 246 yards on 24 carries to lead Alabama to a 20-6 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks. The win moved Alabama to the top spot in this week’s AP poll past conference rival Florida. Ingram is third in the nation in rushing with 905 yards after his big performance. He has rushed for at least 140 yards in four games this season and is averaging nearly seven yards per carry. Ingram has 11 total touchdowns for the Tide this year. In his freshman campaign in 2008, Ingram rushed for 12 touchdowns while gaining 728 yards. He will get some more attention this week as the top-ranked Alabama squad entertains Tennessee in a nationally televised contest.
Jimmy Clausen – Notre Dame Fighting Irish
(see latest Heisman Odds)
The junior signal-caller nearly pulled off another dramatic rally last week but his Irish squad fell to USC by a final of 34-27. Against one of the nation’s top defenses, Clausen passed for 260 yards with a pair of TD throws and no interceptions in the defeat. He is third in the nation in passing efficiency. Clausen has thrown 14 TD passes with only two interceptions for the season. His numbers are better than Tebow’s or McCoy’s. However, Notre Dame isn’t ranked in the top 25. If he is to have a realistic shot at winning the Heisman, Clausen can’t afford any more losses in the final six games of the regular season. The Irish will host Boston College this week.
