Bryce Underwood Backed by Kyle Whittingham After Michigan's Upset Win vs. Oklahoma

Michigan sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood hasn't lit up the stat sheet so far this season, but he still has the confidence of his head coach.

During an appearance on the Triple Option podcast, Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham praised Underwood following the team's 17-10 upset win over then-No. 11 Oklahoma on Saturday.

"He said, 'Coach, whatever it takes to win this game, what you need to do is what I'm willing to do,'" Whittingham said (45:13 mark). "… He is such a willing football player, and his work habits are terrific… I think the best days are ahead for Bryce, and he wants to be great."

Underwood threw for just 111 yards on 9-of-17 passing against the Sooners, though he added 87 rushing yards and a touchdown to help lead the Wolverines to their second straight win to start the 2026 campaign. Michigan re-entered the AP Top 25 at No. 19 following the victory.

Across two games, Underwood has completed 53.8 percent of his passes for 281 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He's also added 134 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

Despite Underwood's pedestrian numbers, the 2-0 record is the only thing that matters for the Wolverines. Michigan will try to keep the momentum going when it hosts UTEP (1-1) on Saturday.
