WWE Rumors: Buying or Selling Buzz on Undertaker, John Cena, Elias and More

Erik BeastonJan 23, 2018

In the wake of WWE Raw 25 and with the 2018 Royal Rumble on the horizon, the wrestling rumor mill is heating up.

From an update on a long-supposed WrestleMania bout to a television program for franchise star John Cena, the speculation is running wild as the hottest period in professional wrestling draws near.

In the coming weeks, who can fans expect to see Cena sparring with and why? What match might he be involved in on April 8 in New Orleans?

John Cena vs. The Undertaker Still in the Works?

Fans who tuned into Raw 25 expecting to see the first hints of an Undertaker vs. John Cena match for WrestleMania were disappointed by what actually occurred.

Undertaker cut a promo, and Cena was involved in an angle elsewhere on the show (more on that in a moment), but they did not interact with each other in the slightest. According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Cageside Seats), those fans will still get what they so desperately want.

The report insists the seeds for the program will be sowed in the coming weeks and that Cena vs. Undertaker is still the plan.

Buy or Sell?

Buy. Undertaker vs. Cena is the last great, big-money match WrestleMania has at its disposal. Both Cena and Undertaker are industry icons who have been kept away from each other for the most part, squaring off only a handful of times since Cena's rise to the top of the card, primarily in tag team matches.

Both are almost too good for anything else at this point—outside of a showdown with a fellow icon like Brock Lesnar or Goldberg.

Most importantly, pitting them against each other does not hurt any of the full-time Superstars who will be asked to carry the mantle in the wake of WrestleMania. That is, perhaps, the greatest silver lining in the battle of part-timers on wrestling's grandest stage.

Cena's Television Program?

It appears a potential match with The Undertaker is not the only Superstar with whom Cena may have his hands full over the next few months.

According to Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats, Cena will be working Raw's resident sinister songster, Elias.

"As set up at Raw 25, Elias will feud with Cena after Royal Rumble. He’s taking the role planned for Samoa Joe before his foot injury."

The revelation that the program was originally intended to be Cena vs. Joe is disappointing for fans, if only because those matches could have been extraordinary additions to Raw in the weeks preceding WrestleMania.

Buy or Sell?

Buy. Cena vs. Elias has been fun to this point. We first saw the Superstars engage each other on Christmas night, when Elias attacked the leader of the Cenation but fell just short of actually beating him. Since then, he has hinted that their differences were not resolved with that one match, and his assault on Cena at Raw 25 only confirmed they have unfinished business.

Elias has been superb since making his leap to the main roster and has proven himself against elite performers, including Finn Balor and Roman Reigns. A series of matches and angles with Cena will only serve to elevate his star, even if he does not necessarily emerge victoriously from the feud.

Injury Updates on Jason Jordan and Kevin Owens

Ortman rounds out Tuesday's look at the rumor mill with an update on Raw tag team champion Jason Jordan and marquee star of SmackDown Kevin Owens after both missed recent house show events.

"Despite lingering injuries that have been keeping them off house shows, both Kevin Owens and Jason Jordan are expected to wrestle as planned at Royal Rumble."

Buy or Sell?

Buy. Like him or not, Jordan has developed into a high-profile player on Raw and has recently shown hints of a potential heel persona that could earn him even greater exposure and success should it ever come to fruition. His partnership with Seth Rollins has made for some entertaining television of late, and their Raw Tag Team Championship defense against The Bar should make for one of the better matches on Sunday's card.

Owens is involved in SmackDown's most significant contribution to the card: a 2-on-1 Handicap match against AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. Had he not been able to compete, a storyline months in the making would have taken a major blow.

Both viewed completely differently by the loyal WWE fanbase, their involvement on Raw, SmackDown and pay-per-view on the Road to WrestleMania figure to be integral to more than one story.
