Serge Ibaka, James Johnson Suspended 1 Game for Fight During Heat vs. Raptors
The NBA has handed down its punishment to Serge Ibaka of the Toronto Raptors and James Johnson of the Miami Heat for their fight during the third quarter of Tuesday's game at the Air Canada Centre.
Per USA Today's Sam Amick, it suspended both Ibaka and Johnson for one game.
The fight began when Ibaka appeared to throw an elbow into Johnson, who retaliated by throwing a punch.
Both players were ejected from the game following their altercation.
Johnson issued an apology for his role in the fight and getting suspended on Twitter:
"First off, I would like to apologize to my teammates, coaching staff, the entire NBA community and most importantly our fans for last night's actions that led to my ejection and suspension for tonight's game.
"The altercation on the court was unacceptable and should have been handled differently, aggression is never the solution and violence can never be condoned in this sport or in society and I am sincerely sorry.
"I have let my Heat family down and that truly troubles me. I will take the consequences of my actions and make sure that this will not happen again."
Tensions were high for both the Raptors and Heat during the contest. After the Heat earned a 90-89 win, Goran Dragic and DeMar DeRozan exchanged words, and DeRozan shoved Miami's point guard before coaches and players separated them.
"Nothing special," Dragic said about the incident, via ESPN.com. "Just exchanged some words. No big deal."
Ibaka has been ejected from games five times in his career. Johnson has been tossed three times.
The Raptors host the Cleveland Cavaliers in a marquee Eastern Conference matchup Thursday. The Heat will face the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Wednesday.
