WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from September 20

Erik BeastonSep 20, 2017

The Undisputed Era is upon NXT, as Trent Seven and Tyler Bate found out the hard way Wednesday night on WWE Network.

Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish capitalized on interference from Adam Cole to defeat Mustache Mountain and earn their first significant victory with the brand.

The celebration was short-lived, though, as NXT champion Drew McIntyre sought revenge for the assault that left him lying at TakeOver: Brooklyn.

He was not alone.

Also seeking vengeance for an attack at the hands of the treacherous trio was Sanity, who took the fight to them and left them fleeing to safety.

NXT will not be Fish, O'Reilly and Cole's personal playground and they found that out the hard way Wednesday night.

The Velveteen Dream played mind games with Aleister Black, Bianca Belair picked up a quality win over Lacey Evans, and Johnny Gargano continued his winning ways to round out the broadcast.

Johnny Gargano vs. Tino Sabbatelli

1 of 5

A week after knocking off a game Riddick Moss, Johnny Gargano battled Tino Sabbatelli in singles competition, looking to continue his winning ways against the tag team specialist and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer.

Sabbatelli worked the head and neck, grounding Gargano and keeping him from unloading the energetic, hard-hitting offense fans expect from Johnny Wrestling.

The popular babyface fought back into the match, delivering a big enzuigiri kick. A mistimed springboard landed him in the arms of Sabatelli, who delivered a powerslam to regain control.

It was short-lived as the former professional football player was trapped in the Garga-No Escape with no choice but to tap out, handing his opponent another impressive victory.

Analysis

This was nowhere near the quality of last week's match, but that can probably be traced to the fact Sabbatelli is nowhere near the quality of worker Moss is.

At the very least, it was a showcase for Gargano, who has star potential and may be the most beloved performer on the roster.

Sometimes, that is all a given segment needs to be considered a success.

Lacey Evans vs. Bianca Belair

2 of 5

Fresh off impressive performances in the Mae Young Classic, Lacey Evans and Bianca Belair engaged in a spirited, competitive match Wednesday night.

The tenacious Belair worked over Evans, showing off her impressive strength with a double chicken wing. She continued to assault the shoulders and back of The Lady of NXT, using the ropes as a weapon against her larger opponent.

Evans fought back into the bout, delivering a leg drop for a count of two. A big suplex by Belair cut her comeback attempt short.

A bronco buster and neckbreaker from Evans nearly capped her comeback with a victory.

Belair used her hair to whip her opponent, then finished her off with a reverse powerbomb for the impressive win.

Analysis

Cocky, arrogant, powerful and bad, Belair screams "star."

Conversely, this was one of Evans' more impressive performances to date.

It is clear they have locked horns before, their in-ring chemistry being obvious.

Belair going over is probably the right move given the strength of her in-ring work. She performed up to the level of Kairi Sane in the Mae Young Classic and was one of the breakout stars of that tournament. Seizing that momentum and letting her shine on television is the right move at the right time.

Evans will have her opportunities. Continued growth and evolution between the ropes is key to her future in WWE.

Aleister Black Speaks

3 of 5

The dark enigma that is Aleister Black returned to the NXT Arena to address the faithful fans jam-packed into the stands. It was the first time in his stint with the company that he spoke on the microphone.

Black discussed his 15-year journey, telling his story through the tattoos that paint his skin. He began discussing what he needs to do in the next step of his career. Before he could continue, The Velveteen Dream interrupted.

Dream asked Black where his scars are. "The Dream doesn't see scars. What I see is a man who is hurt. I see a man who is pain." He added, "it is scribbled on your skin."

The eccentric star claimed Black looked afraid. He was scared to show emotion and of the light.

"I know you have a heart. It's just in the wrong place,' Dream said before Black kicked the microphone out of his hand.

Dream dropped down to his knees, came face-to-face with a seated Black and slithered out of the ring in a way that would make 1995-era Goldust blush.

Grade

A

Analysis

This was as good as Velveteen Dream has been at anything since his debut.

Bizarre, with unclear motives, he stood feet away from the most feared man on the NXT roster and did not back down. He played mind games with Black, setting up a rivalry that will be both compelling and engaging in ways main-roster programs involving guys such as Bray Wyatt have not been in years.

A superb segment helped significantly by the crowd's explosive reaction to Dream's antics.

No Way Jose vs. Lars Sullivan

4 of 5

No Way Jose sought vengeance after repeated beatdowns suffered at the hands of Lars Sullivan over the last month.

The big man withstood an early onslaught and grounded Jose with a nasty series of knees to the ribcage.

Sullivan took the fight to the floor, then delivered a few corner smashes to further obliterate his opponent.

Jose fed off the crowd and tried to fight back into the match, but Sullivan cut him off.

After surviving a big sleeper attempt by Jose, Sullivan delivered a diving headbutt and scored a huge slam to pick up a dominant, one-sided victory.

Analysis

Sullivan rolled into Full Sail University and straight obliterated an established NXT star in Jose. It instantly lent him credibility and announced to fans that the big man is to be reckoned with in the coming weeks and months.

He is far from a polished product, but Sullivan is a believable force between the ropes and a Superstar who can be further developed, grown and evolved with the help of NXT's trainers and talent.

Tyler Bate and Trent Seven vs. Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish

5 of 5

"Shock The System" played over the PA system and Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish made their way to the ring for Wednesday's main event tag team match with Mustache Mountain's Trent Seven and former Great Britain champion Tyler Bate.

The ever-dangerous Adam Cole watched from ringside as his teammates in The Undisputed Era sought their first victory in NXT.

Bate and Seven frustrated O'Reilly early, the former catching the ex-Ring of Honor champion with a senton or two. A distraction by O'Reilly and a big kick from Fish allowed the heels to take control of the match, grounding the aforementioned Seven.

Seven fought through the overwhelming onslaught of his opponents to deliver a Seven Star Lariat that created some separation for the babyfaces.

The action broke down with Seven wiping Fish out at ringside with a suicide dive. Back inside, O'Reilly trapped Bate in a guillotine. The former UK champion fought out of the submission but found himself back on the mat courtesy of a combination suplex/kick by the heels.

Seven exploded back into the match, unloading several openhand strikes on his opponents.

O'Reilly countered with a cross armbreaker, but Seven fought through it.

At ringside, Cole wiped out Bate and the heels delivered stereo roundhouse kicks, followed by a version of Total Elimination to score the win.

NXT champion Drew McIntyre hit the ring, chasing the heels off. From behind, Sanity approached and unloaded on the cocky trio. Eric Young sent O'Reilly into the squared circle, where he was met by McIntyre. The heels escaped one more time to close out the show.

Grade

A

Analysis

A hard-fought, high-impact main event that earned O'Reilly and Fish a quality victory and showcased just how dangerous The Undisputed Era can be when united.

Bate and Seven were their typically great selves, but the biggest news coming out of the segment was McIntyre and Sanity getting a measure of revenge on the heels and presenting them with their first adversity.

How Cole, O'Reilly and Fish respond is a question that must be answered and will make for entertaining television going forward.
