James DudkoJul 30, 2017

Jordan Smith beat defending champion Alexander Levy in a play-off to win the 2017 European Open at Green Eagle Golf Courses in Hamburg, Germany, on Sunday.

Smith rolled in a birdie putt on the par-five 18 to end the play-off after Levy had missed the chance to do the same earlier.

Both players finished 13-under in a windswept fourth round.

Perhaps the decisive moment came when Smith had the chance to hole a birdie putt on the par-three 17 and tie Levy. However, the Englishman's putter went cold, and he had to settle for par and staying one shot behind the leader.

Levy and Smith then proceeded to make hard work of the final hole, with the latter needing to pitch from thick grass between bunkers to land near the pin. Smith managed it to put the pressure on Levy, who had to roll in a birdie putt for the win.

Feeling the pressure, Levy pushed the putt wide, leaving Smith to take the birdie and put the onus on Levy to force extra time. The defending champion obliged to save par and guaranteed a play-off.

The European Tour official Twitter account relayed the key shots from Smith's birdie:

Both golfers remained difficult to separate at the start of the play-off as tee and second shots landed within a a whisker of one another.

Levy read the green well to leave himself an apparently simple-looking birdie putt. By contrast, Smith's roll from the edge of the green was ill-judged, leaving him with a lot to do.

He had to settle for par, giving Levy the chance to birdie for the win, a chance he couldn't take:

Both players pulled their next tee shots to the right and had to play out from the rough. Smith reached the edge of the green quicker, putting the pressure back on Levy.

It was Smith who then chipped into a better spot on the green before Levy rolled inches wide of a birdie putt. Smith was left to birdie the hole and seal a memorable win:

Levy had seemingly put himself in position to win with some clutch putting late on both nines. The Frenchman rolled in this birdie on the eighth:

Things were even better for Levy on the back nine, as he holed consecutive birdies ahead of the final two holes:

Smith's card wasn't without blemishes. He slipped to a pair of bogeys on the front nine after landing in some rough water:

However, Smith did find key shots when he needed them. He dropped a birdie in on the 11th and repeated the trick on the par-five 15.

The only players who managed to keep pace with the tussle at the top were Johan Edfors and Siddikur Rahman. Both golfers finished on 11-under thanks largely to some terrific shots on the back nine.

For Edfors, it meant dropping this fine shot barely short of the pin on the 15th:

The Swede sealed the eagle before holing a birdie at the par-four 18. His two-under score was good enough for a share of third.

Rahman joined Edfors after dropping in three birdies over the front nine. He was solid on the back nine, managing par on every hole bar the 12th, which he birdied with this classy putt:

He is no big hitter, but Rahman was a model of efficiency on the greens.

Yet it's Smith who has earned the most plaudits. The 24-year-old is a star on the rise, a fact underlined by this win.
