RBC Canadian Open 2017: Charley Hoffman Climbs to Top of Saturday Leaderboard

Mike ChiariJul 29, 2017

A seven-under 65 moved Charley Hoffman into first place Saturday through three rounds of the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

Hoffman improved to 17-under for the tournament, and he will enter the final round with a one-shot lead over Kevin Chappell:

Robert Garrigus sits just two strokes behind Hoffman at 15-under after tying the course record Saturday with a 10-under 62.

Golf on CBS provided a look at Garrigus' scorecard, which included six birdies, two eagles and no bogeys on the day:

As seen in the following highlight of Garrigus' round courtesy of PGA Tour on Twitter, all aspects of his game were working, from his tee shots to his approach shots and his putting:

After the round, Garrigus discussed his performance and how the buzz of the crowd helped propel him to a historic outing:

Although Hoffman wasn't quite as dominant as Garrigus, his seven-under round was the second-best of the day, and it put him in ideal position to pick up his fifth PGA Tour win.

Hoffman carded eight birdies and one bogey Saturday, and he took his first lead of the day by birdying the par-three 15th:

While Hoffman gave it back with a bogey on No. 17, he finished strong with a birdie on the 18th to carry the lead into the clubhouse.

Based on how well he played in the third round, it comes as little surprise that Hoffman doesn't intend to change much in terms of his approach for the final round:

Youngsters have dominated the sport in recent weeks and months, but the 40-year-old Hoffman will have a chance to change that Sunday.

According to Justin Ray of GolfChannel.com, golfers outside their 20s are in the midst of a lengthy drought with regard to winning tournaments:

Hoffman isn't the only veteran in the mix, as the 31-year-old Chappell lurks one shot back and 33-year-old Gary Woodland is tied with the 39-year-old Garrigus in third.

Woodland came one shot shy of tying the course record with a nine-under 63 on Friday, and he followed that with a four-under 68 on Saturday to remain in the hunt.

Defending RBC Canadian Open champion Jhonattan Vegas is hanging in there three strokes back as well, and world No. 1 Dustin Johnson still has an outside shot.

Johnson is five back at 12-under after carding a four-under 68 in the third round.

As seen in the following tweet, DJ came out of the gates firing Saturday and appeared to be on the verge of making a run:

After shooting five-under on the front nine, however, he had to settle for a one-over back nine, which will require him to have a huge day Sunday to steal the win.

Johnson has twice finished second in the RBC Canadian Open, and he may need a Garrigus-esque round to get over the hump.
