Alec Ogletree Says Contract Extension 'Will Get Done Eventually'

Tim DanielsJul 29, 2017

Los Angeles Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree is optimistic he'll eventually be able to work out a long-term contract extension with the organization.

On Friday, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times passed along comments from the defensive playmaker, who didn't sound concerned about the situation at this stage.

"I still don't have a deal yet, but it's in the works," Ogletree said. "When it happens, it happens. It will get done eventually."

The Georgia native quickly developed into one of the NFL's most productive linebackers after the Rams took him with the 30th overall pick in the 2013 draft. He's tallied 406 combined tackles, 33 passes defended, 11 forced fumbles, five interceptions and 3.5 sacks in 52 games.

Ogletree, who missed a majority of the 2015 season with a broken right fibula, bounced back last year with a career-high 136 combined tackles, which ranked seventh in the league.

His comments Friday about the contract talks echo those he made during offseason workouts in April.

"It'll happen when it happens. Right now, my focus is being here for OTAs and going through the install," Ogletree told reporters. "I'll be here, not really worried about the contract thing."

He could be forced to wait a while longer while the Rams attempt to work out an agreement with star defensive lineman Aaron Donald, who didn't report for the start of training camp Friday as he seeks a new deal.

"It would be great to see him here," Ogletree said, per Klein. "I don't know what his situation is as far as whether he'll show up or not, but you definitely like to have everybody here. When you do a team sport, you want every member—and you know he's a big part of what we do—so it definitely would be great to have him here."

Ogletree will make $8.4 million in base salary this upcoming season, which, according to Spotrac, ranks first among inside linebackers in 2017, and he'll be eligible to hit free agency following the campaign.

Although the Rams have the option to use the franchise tag, that would still keep Ogletree among the top-paid players at the position.
