5 WWE Superstar Pairings That Would Make for Epic Tag Teams

The Doctor Chris MuellerJul 29, 2017

Throughout the history of WWE, many Superstars have been paired together to form tag teams. Sometimes, these pairings are temporary, but every so often, a combination works out well enough to keep them together for longer than expected.

We saw this quite a bit during the Attitude Era and the years that followed. WWE had too many top talents, so it was forced to put some of them in the tag team division to give them something to do.

Duos like The Rock and Mick Foley, Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin and Kane and X-Pac were never intended to be long-term alliances, but they proved popular with fans.

WWE has more main event and midcard stars than it knows what to do with, and with the recent breakups of a few tag teams, there is room to add some new tandems to the mix.

This slideshow will look at five potential pairings that would make epic tag teams. Not all of these will seem possible, but each one would be fun to watch.

Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe

1 of 5

Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe have been at each other's throats since the latter debuted as Triple H's newest hired gun in January.

Their Samoan heritage gives them a connection, but it also gives them a reason to hate each other. As Paul Heyman has pointed out a few times, Joe is one of the few Samoans in the business with no relation to the Anoa'i family.

It would be amazing to see the two of them form a tag team at some point in the future, and it might be one of the few things Reigns could do to quell some of the boos during his entrances.

It would take a lot of work from the creative team to turn them from rivals into friends, but WWE could also go the route of making them uneasy allies like it did with Cesaro and Sheamus at first.

Joe and Reigns are powerhouses in every sense of the word but also possess more versatility than casual fans may realize. Seeing them run through other teams on their way to the titles would be a fun ride.

AJ Styles and Finn Balor

2 of 5

WWE seems happy to capitalize off the Bullet Club name without working with New Japan Pro Wrestling or any current members of the stable, so it may as well keep going.

AJ Styles and Finn Balor are two of the most prominent former members of the popular stable, but they weren't part of the group at the same time.

Fans of WWE and NJPW would love to see Styles and Balor combine their skills to form what might be one of the most talented tag teams of all time.

Having a full stable with Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows would be great, but then WWE would just be ripping off the Bullet Club instead of paying homage to it.

Balor and Styles are both just as comfortable flying through the air as they are keeping the fight on the mat. Even if their union only lasted six months or a short title reign, they would get some incredible matches out of the rest of the division.

The only time we have seen these two together was as cardboard cutouts in the back of a car during an episode of Ride Along. The WWE Universe wants to see what Balor and Styles can do when the flesh-and-blood versions join forces.

Luke Harper and Dean Ambrose

3 of 5

The Shield and The Wyatt Family were two of the most popular stables to come along in years, but not all of the Superstars involved went on to become top names in the company.

Luke Harper and Dean Ambrose have had their share of great matches outside the groups, but Bray Wyatt, Seth Rollins and Reigns have been the most successful.

Sometimes, it feels like WWE doesn't know whether it wants Ambrose to be the next Stone Cold or a solid midcard talent. Harper, on the other hand, has been completely wasted as a singles star.

The two have a lot of similar characteristics that go beyond wearing jeans and tank tops to the ring, and having them join forces would give both men some much-needed direction.

Both Superstars are brawlers who like to throw in the occasional high-flying maneuver to show everyone they can do more than punch people in the face. They have stolen the show as opponents, and they could do the same as partners.

Randy Orton and John Cena

4 of 5

John Cena and Randy Orton have done just about everything there is to do in a WWE ring together, except win the Tag Team Championships.

The two have teamed together a few times over the years, but it was either a one-time thing or something they were forced to do as rivals.

When they were put up against the entire Raw roster, we saw a glimpse of the chemistry they could have as partners, and it was glorious.

One Raw Superstar after another fell to an RKO or Attitude Adjustment before everyone attacked Cena and Orton at once.

WWE clearly wants to build new world title contenders, so established talents have to take a backseat while new guys make names for themselves.

Putting Orton and Cena together would free up some space in the main event scene while also giving the tag team division a boost in star power. There would be no downside in taking two of the most successful wrestlers in WWE history and pairing them together for a short run as tag team champions.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

5 of 5

Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens are best friends in real life, but on WWE television, their feud seems to have an unlimited shelf life.

Some fans would be content seeing them fight forever, but there is also a group of people who would love to see them put their differences aside and form a tag team.

KO has been a heel since the night he debuted in May 2015, but we all know he can work as a babyface if he wants to, especially with the level of popularity he already has as a villain.

Zayn wouldn't be as great as a bad guy, so the best way for this to work would be for Owens to slowly transition from the jerk he has been playing to someone who relies solely on his skills to get him wins.

Finding the right storyline to reunite the former friends would be easy because so many fans would just be happy it's happening at all. Once they are together, all WWE has to do is put them in the ring opposite a decent tag team and wait for the show-stealing performances to happen.

The five duos on this list would add some depth to the tag team division, but everyone has their own dream tag teams. Which Superstars would you like to see join forces in WWE?
