Mike ChiariJul 28, 2017

Martin Flores fired a six-under 66 for the second consecutive day to seize the lead the RBC Canadian Open through two rounds at Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, on Friday.

Flores is 12-under for the tournament, and leads Matt Every, Gary Woodland and Brandon Hagy by one stroke entering the third round:

The 35-year-old native of Texas has just one career Web.com Tour victory to his credit, and he has never won on the PGA Tour.

Flores started the second round trailing the leaders by just one shot, and his consistently strong play allowed him to leapfrog them with a round that consisted of four birdies, one eagle and no bogeys.

While Flores is the golfer to beat, the best round of the day belonged to Woodland, who fell one stroke short of tying the course record.

Woodland shot a nine-under 63, which tied his best career round on the PGA Tour.

He climbed 68 spots up the leaderboard and carded 10 birdies on the day with just one bogey.

Woodland started on the back nine, and at one point he had six birdies in a row from No. 15 through No. 2.

As seen in this video courtesy of the PGA Tour, one of Woodland's best shots came on the par-three fourth when he narrowly missed an ace:

The following tweet from Golf Channel summed up Woodland's game well:

Among the most surprising names in the running is that of Vijay Singh.

While Singh is a former Masters and PGA Championship winner, his last PGA Tour victory came in 2008, and he is 54 years of age.

Singh kept himself in the mix with a four-under 68, and he is just two shots behind Flores at 10-under for the tournament.

Justin Ray of GolfChannel.com put Singh's contention in perspective:

One shot behind Singh sits Jhonattan Vegas, who has a recent history of success at the RBC Canadian Open.

Vegas won the tournament last year, which marked just the second PGA Tour win of his career.

The Venezuela native shot a three-under 69 on Friday, and he was aided by shots like this approach on the par-five 18th:

Arguably the top player in the event is in the mix as well after world No. 1 Dustin Johnson shot a three-under 69 to improve to eight-under.

Johnson finished second in the RBC Canadian Open last year and in 2013, and he remains in search of his first win in the tournament.

Ray noted that Johnson has had his way with Glen Abbey Golf Course in recent years:

With regard to other golfers of note, both Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar played their way into the weekend, as they are tied for 46th at five-under.

Watson struggled to the tune of a one-over 73, but Kuchar played well, as the British Open runner-up carded a four-under 68.
