Gerard Pique Reveals His 'Dream' to Be President of Barcelona
Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique has revealed that his "dream" is to take over as president of the Catalan club after he retires from playing.
The 30-year-old said he is not cut out to be a coach at the Camp Nou but he wants to continue working for the club he joined as a youth player in 1997, per Japanese magazine Soccer King (via Sport): "I'm not made to be a coach. I want to be president of Barcelona, that's my dream. When I retire I want to do whatever I can to help the club I love."
Pique switched to Manchester United's youth academy in 2004 and made his first senior career appearances for the Old Trafford club.
But he returned to Barca in 2008 and has been a stalwart for the club ever since, winning six La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions Leagues, the Copa del Rey on five occasions and numerous other trophies.
Pique still likely has a number of years left in his playing career. He is now in his 30s but could well remain in his prime for the next four or five years.
It is clear, though, that he has plans beyond his playing days, and they involve remaining at Barcelona.
Sport's J. Giraldo explained late last year that 2027 could be the year for Pique to first run for the Barcelona presidency.
Given all he has contributed to the club—and he will likely have plenty more silverware in his trophy cabinet by then—Pique should be a popular choice if and when the time comes.
