WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from July 25

The Doctor Chris MuellerJul 25, 2017

The recent cancellations of Talking Smack and Unfiltered with Renee Young on the WWE Network have sparked speculation that WWE might do the same thing to 205 Live.

The cost for producing the cruiserweight-exclusive show is low since it uses all the same equipment as SmackDown, so there is little chance of the show going anywhere anytime soon.

However, the writing team needs to find a way to make the show more interesting or viewership levels might drop to the point where WWE has no choice but to can it.

Neville and a handful of other Superstars deliver great performances every week, but the non-title feuds have been low quality for a long time.

Hopefully, things will change now that the WWE Universe has gotten to know the roster a little better. Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of 205 Live.

Ariya Daivari vs. Neville

1 of 3

Akira Tozawa joined the commentary table to watch Ariya Daivari take on Neville. This was an odd heel vs. heel pairing, but we have seen WWE do more matches like this recently, so it may become more commonplace in the future.

Daivari's win-loss record on 205 Live is possibly the worst in the division, so it was a little weird to see him put into a match with the cruiserweight champion.

Despite Neville's dominance, he is great at making sure his opponents look good at the end of the match. He sold Daivari's offense in a way that made The Persian Lion look better than he ever has before.

In a shocking twist, Daivari ended up picking up the win by count-out after shoving Neville into Tozawa. This was a solid match, but it won't get Daivari a title push anytime soon.

Grade: C+

Notes and Highlights

  • The crew was still putting the ringside area back together at the top of the show following Kevin Owens' hissy fit at the end of SmackDown.
  • Neville gave an interview at the top of the show. His shtick is starting to get a little old. He needs to lose the title so he can go back to being the vicious heel pursuing the valiant champion.
  • Daivari dedicating his performances to legendary Iranian wrestlers is a cool addition to his character. He still needs a lot of work in other areas, but paying tribute to his idols humanizes him.

The Brian Kendrick Vents His Frustrations

2 of 3

The Brian Kendrick came to the ring and complained about how he tries to teach everyone important lessons every week but nobody listens to him.

He singled out Jack Gallagher as the target of his insults. He made fun of Gentleman Jack's white complexion and his red hair while showing altered images of him on the big screen. They ended up leading to a final picture Gallagher dressed like a clown.

Kendrick is an incredible talent, but he was not being given anything to work with. This was clearly a case of a Superstar working from someone else's script instead of coming up with his own promo.

Jackie Boy said taking the high road with Kendrick wouldn't work, so he planned on knocking his head off. Kendrick left the ring before he had a chance and put this segment out of its misery.

Grade: D-

Notes and Highlights

  • WWE played a video highlighting Mustafa Ali and Drew Gulak's final showdown from last week before this segment. It made their feud look better than several weeks of actual matches ever did. It's another example of WWE's editing team being the best in the business.
  • Gallagher's suits are always on point. He must have a huge collection.
  • At least Kendrick didn't dress as Gallagher this time. This feud has already worn out its welcome, but their final encounter should be great considering the level of talent both men possess.

TJP and Tony Nese vs. Cedric Alexander and Rich Swann

3 of 3

TJP and Rich Swann's friendly feud continued this week with a tag team match that saw Perkins team up with Tony Nese to battle Swann and Cedric Alexander

Nese and Alexander almost got into a fight backstage, but TJP and Swann kept things from getting physical until they got to the ring.

These four men have been part of the division since its inception, but they have had different levels of success. Swann and TJP are former champions, while Alexander and Nese have been held back by injuries and poor bookings respectively.

All four competitors are as versatile as they are talented, but it took longer than expected for this match to reach the level of excitement everyone expected heading into it.

Once they picked up the pace, the crowd started to wake up. After an entertaining final sequence, Nese shoved Alexander off the top rope so Perkins could cover him for the pin.

Grade: B

Notes and Highlights

  • Nese delivered an entire promo during his entrance without a microphone. The majority of the fans in attendance probably had no idea what he was saying.
  • Nese is one of the few Superstars who has a physique perfect for action figures. Most people never resemble the body the companies give them for figures.
  • Swann and Alexander would make a great full-time tag team if WWE ever decided to let the cruiserweights compete for other titles in the future.
  • The ref totally screwed up a pin toward the end of the match. You could see a look of confusion on TJP's face when he stopped the count at one.
