Roma Staves Off Tottenham Rally with Late Goal in 2017 ICC
A wild finish allowed AS Roma to escape Tuesday's International Champions Classic match with a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs overcame a 2-0 deficit in the final few minutes of the match, but Marco Tumminello came through with the game-winner for Roma in the 92nd minute.
Both teams are now 1-1 in the friendly tournament after matches against Paris Saint-Germain and each other.
Despite the final score, Tottenham controlled most of the match, especially in the second half. According to ESPN, the Premier League squad held the ball for 57 percent of the action while getting more than twice as many shots on net.
The story of the match seemed to be the inability to turn these into goals, but the squad came through with two dramatic goals in the 87th and 91st minutes to tie the match at 2-2.
Unfortunately for Spurs, Roma responded with a score just a minute later to secure the victory before it went into penalty kicks.
Max Bretos of ESPN summed up the action:
The first goal of the match came on a defensive mistake by Cameron Carter-Vickers, who was called for a handball in the box.
Diego Perotti made him pay with a goal from the penalty spot in the 13th minute. His unique walk up to the ball was captured by the team's Twitter account:
Harry Kane had a few tries to get an equalizer before halftime for Tottenham. He hit one shot off the right post that was eventually cleared, and then he got a few more chances on his own that just couldn't get into the back of the net.
Although Spurs took twice as many shots in the first half (8-4), they still trailed 1-0 at intermission.
Dan Kilpatrick of ESPN FC noted the disappointing play from the young members of the squad:
The second half featured a good amount of chippy play from both sides, especially for just a friendly, although the referee did his best to contain the teams.
Meanwhile, Tottenham controlled possession for much of the next half-hour, attacking in the final third while earning plenty of legitimate chances near the net. However, the next goal went to Roma on a counterattack in the 70th minute.
Cengiz Under saw the ball bounce right to him and fired it home with his left foot.
Ben Pearce of Yahoo Sports described the mistakes that led to the goal:
It took until the 87th minute for Spurs to get onto the scoresheet, with Harry Winks finishing from close range on a ball that came off the post. Although this seemed like too little, too late, Vincent Janssen scored a few minutes later on a low cross from Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.
This simply delayed the inevitable as Kevin Strootman found Tumminello for Roma's third and final goal.
Both teams will end their ICC play with matchups against teams from their own country. Tottenham will take on Manchester City Saturday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
Roma will take on Juventus at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday.
