Cesc Fabregas Says Alvaro Morata, Michy Batshuayi Need to 'Improve' at Chelsea
Cesc Fabregas has urged Chelsea team-mates Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi to "improve as quick as possible" now that they are the club's first-choice forwards.
Per Sky Sports, he said:
"They are two young strikers who will have to improve as quick as possible because they are our main strikers.
"When you are the main striker for Chelsea you need to fight for all the competitions and if you are going to fight for all competitions you need your strikers to score lots of goals.
"He [Morata] has a lot of potential, the same as Michy to improve. It's up to them how far they want to go."
Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in a £70 million move on Friday, and he is expected to replace Diego Costa up front after manager Antonio Conte informed the latter he is not a part of his plans for the upcoming season.
Morata struck 20 goals in all competitions last season, the most prolific of his career. He played just 1,872 minutes for Los Blancos, though, meaning he boasted the impressive record of finding the net every 94 minutes on average.
SB Nation's Lucas Navarrete believes the Blues have overpaid for the 24-year-old:
As for Batshuayi, he arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer for £33 million but played just 702 minutes for the Blues as he found himself behind Costa in the pecking order.
He netted nine times, though—including the goal that sealed the Premier League title—at an average of one every 78 minutes.
The Belgian has also impressed in pre-season, putting in a star turn against Arsenal:
Bleacher Report's Garry Hayes has his doubts about Batshuayi, though:
If the pair can maintain similar minutes-per-goal records next season, in which they should both play a substantial role, they'll rack up excellent numbers.
They both have something to prove, Morata in particular after his enormous price tag and his lack of a prolific goalscoring record prior to last year.
The pair have both made the most of the opportunities they've received in recent times, though, so they deserve the chance to show they can handle the responsibility of leading the line for the club.
With the support of their team-mates and the ammunition Chelsea's creative players can provide them with, they might both thrive next year.
