British Open 2017: Real-Time Leaderboard Updates for Sunday Leaders

Steve SilvermanJul 23, 2017

All eyes are on Jordan Spieth as he attempts to win his third major championship at the British Open Sunday.

Although he had a somewhat troubling start to his final round at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, he was tied with Matt Kuchar at eight under par through nine holes.

Haotong Li of China shot up the leaderboard in the final round with a score of 63. He was the early leader in the clubhouse with a score of six under par for his four rounds.

Li did not let himself think that his score might be good enough to allow him to contend for the title. "If I can finish in the top four, I will be very happy," he said to NBC's Steve Sands on the network's broadcast.

If Spieth is successful, he will join Jack Nicklaus as the only golfers to have won three different major championships before the age of 24. Spieth is still 23, and he will turn 24 next week.

Spieth has been a front-runner at Royal Birkdale, as he started the tournament with an opening round of 65 before shooting a 69 in the second round and another 65 in Saturday's third round. His Thursday and Saturday rounds were impressive since both of them were bogey-free, but his Friday round may have been even better since he managed to break par despite playing a in a howling wind and rain.

Spieth was 11 under par as he began play on Sunday.

Conditions for the final round were good at the start, but Weather.com reports that there is a 50 percent chance of rain along with windy conditions.

Spieth bogeyed three of the first four holes before he birdied the fifth and registered pars on the sixth and seventh holes. However, Spieth bogeyed the ninth while Kuchar birdied the hole, and that left the two competitors tied for the lead.

Spieth was quite satisfied with his overall play during the third round that saw him finish with a three-stroke lead over Kuchar, who is looking for his first major championship.

"Pretty stress-free," Spieth said, per Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press (h/t Boston Globe) about his third-round play. "On a Saturday with a lead in a major, that’s as good as I can ask for."

Kuchar was nearly as good as Spieth during the third round as he shot a 66, but a late stumble on the back nine put some distance resulted in separation between the two golfers. Kuchar suffered a double bogey on the 16th hole and he also missed a makeable birdie putt on the 18th hole.

Spieth is in a familiar position, as he won the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open by playing on the lead as he entered the final round. However, he had a five-shot lead with nine holes to play in the 2016 Masters before collapsing.

“I think I’m in a position where it can be very advantageous, just everything I’ve gone through, the good, the bad and everything in the middle,” per Chuck Culpepper of the Washington Post. “I understand that leads can be squandered quickly, and I also understand how you can keep on rolling on one. So it was a humbling experience that I thought at the time could serve me well going forward.”

Austin Connelly of Canada and U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka were six strokes behind Spieth after three rounds.

Both players were struggling Sunday, as the 20-year-old Connelly was four-over through eight holes, while Koepka was one-over and trying to fight his way back into contention.
