British Open 2017: Branden Grace Shoots 62, Jordan Spieth Leads After Day 3

Gianni VerschuerenJul 22, 2017

Jordan Spieth maintained his spot at the top of the leaderboard during Saturday's action at the 2017 British Open, while Branden Grace became the first player to shoot a round of 62 at a major.

Spieth finished at five-under, taking his total for the tournament to 11-under, three shots ahead of Matt Kuchar.

Grace completed his historic round with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes before he held par on No. 18. Golf Channel shared his final put:

Recap

Fans came into the day with an eye on the battle for the lead, but Grace stole the show before Spieth and Rory McIlroy even teed off.

The South African started with a birdie, and he kept up his strong showing with four more birdies on the front nine. Three more followed on the back nine, without a single mistake on the greens.

Per Ryan Lavner of Golf Channel, the 29-year-old had no idea he made history until his caddy told him so: "I had no idea 62 was the lowest ever."

As expected, congratulations poured in from all corners of the sport. Justin Thomas joined in:

Spieth enjoyed a fine day on the course, with three birdies on the front nine and two more on the back nine. For the second time in three rounds, he didn't make a single bogey, setting himself up with a sizable lead entering the final day.

Hideki Matsuyama recorded just one bogey on his way to a round of four-under, which left him with an outside shot at his first major. At four-under, the Japanese star sits well behind Spieth and Kuchar, but the pressure will be on those two to perform.

Kuchar will lead the chasing pack. The 39-year-old carded a four-under Saturday, with a double bogey on the 16th hurting his score.

Austin Connelly and Brooks Koepka are at five-under.
