Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fernando Llorente Rumours

Matt JonesJul 22, 2017

Chelsea will reportedly intensify their efforts to sign Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the coming week.

According to Sky Sports News HQ, the England international is next on Chelsea's list of targets with Alvaro Morata's transfer from Real Madrid wrapped up. It's noted that Oxlade-Chamberlain has no interest in penning a new deal at the Emirates Stadium, with just one year left to run on his current terms.

Chelsea are said to be ready to capitalise on the situation, while Liverpool and Manchester City are also linked.

As we can see courtesy of Squawka Football, last season was one of the best the 23-year-old has enjoyed in terms of productivity:

Oxlade-Chamberlain looked an awesome prospect when he arrived at Arsenal from Southampton in 2011. But, despite some brilliant moments in the red jersey, he's never quite found a way to kick on and realise his potential.

Injuries have halted momentum, while Oxlade-Chamberlain's versatility has also prevented him from carving out a role. Additionally, Arsenal have fierce competition for starting spots in attacking midfield.

A move would potentially reignite a career in danger of stalling. However, as noted by Scouted Football, it's tough to see where he fits into a lot of elite teams in the Premier League:

That applies to Chelsea too. The Blues are well stocked in central midfield with Tiemoue Bakayoko, N'Golo Kante and Cesc Fabregas. It's difficult to see Oxlade-Chamberlain ousting the likes of Eden Hazard, Pedro or Willian in the attacking positions too.

So while a transfer may be what the midfielder needs at this stage of his career, it's important he finds the right club. Although he'd be challenging for big honours at Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte, it's tough to see Oxlade-Chamberlain making massive strides as a player at Chelsea.

Blues Want Fernando Llorente

According to Miguel Delaney of The Independent, Chelsea want to bring in Fernando Llorente from Swansea City as back-up to new signing Morata.

As well as Llorente, Crystal Palace man Christian Benteke is on the club's list of targets.

"Spanish international Llorente has been their main target, having worked with both Conte and Morata before at Juventus, and is seen by the younger forward as something of a mentor given how he talked him through his time at Turin," noted Delaney.

While Llorente may be on the club's agenda, it's suggested Swansea would hold out for around £30 million before selling him. As these numbers from WhoScored.com illustrate, he was vital for the Welsh outfit last season:

Although Llorente is not the most mobile of forwards, he's a player who has used his physicality to great effect in the Premier League.

Juventus' Spanish foward Fernando Torres Llorente (R) and Juventus' coach Antonio Conte answer journalists during a press conference on the eve of the UEFA Champions League group B football match Juventus vs Copenhagen, on November 26, 2013 at their train

The Spain international offered a great focal point for Paul Clement's team last season, pinning defenders, winning battles and grabbing some key goals. Alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson, he was key in Swansea staying in the top flight.

Llorente would surely be keen on a move to Chelsea and would relish the prospect of linking up with Conte again. You sense the Blues will be a lot less enthused about paying the aforementioned asking price, though.
