Jose Mourinho 'Waiting for a Bit More' from Manchester United's Transfer Window
Jose Mourinho has called for Manchester United to make further progress in the transfer market, urging executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to bring in "a bit more."
Per Bruce Archer of the Daily Express, he was asked about United's progress in signing two more players following the captures of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof, replying: "I don't know. I don't know. I'm not in control of that."
He continued:
"The credit of Lukaku and Victor Lindelof to be here on time, the credit is not mine, it is Ed Woodward's and I thank him for that fantastic work to bring us two very important players. But for us but we need a bit more.
"When you see the other teams in the Premier League, the way they get players and good players and you see the champions buy three fantastic, experienced players, [Manchester] City go to the market, Liverpool too and West Ham [United] gets Joe Hart, Chicharito and [Marko] Arnautovic, then wow.
"They play to win the Premier League too, so the teams are fantastic in the market and I'm waiting for a bit more."
The Special One also stressed he was not criticising Woodward and that there is plenty of time remaining before the transfer window shuts, adding: "I understand the difficulty of the situation, because going to the clubs and accepting immediately the price tag, it's not so easy to do that."
United brought in four major signings last summer in the form of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly.
If the Red Devils are to compete for the Premier League title next season, then they likely need at least the same number this summer, with a midfielder and a winger on the agenda, according to Archer.
ESPN's Alex Shaw relayed further comments by Mourinho to Mark Ogden of ESPN FC, but despite the manager's doubts, Shaw believes he will get four players again:
Michael Carrick turns 36 on July 28, and United have a dearth of quality options alongside Pogba and Ander Herrera in midfield. More creativity and penetration in the final third courtesy of a winger would also be a huge asset heading into next season.
They will hope their business is done before their first game of the new season on August 13, but it would be far from disastrous if it isn't provided they bring in the reinforcements they need by the transfer window's closure on August 31.
