The Philippines were especially cold from long range, making only one of their 26 attempts. Gilas dominated the glass, however, with a 40-28 advantage, led my Michael J. Myers' 17 boards to go along with 18 points.
As PBA anchor Charlie T. Cuna pointed out, a lack of shooting was primarily what did the Philippines in:
Gilas had three players reach the 16-point mark, but they didn't receive much complementary scoring. South Korea was a different story, however, with four players scoring in double digits and eight reaching at least six points.
South Korea came out of the gates hot with a 20-16 lead after one quarter and built it up to a five-point advantage entering halftime. The South Koreans then dominated the third quarter to carry a 15-point lead into the fourth, although the Philippines whittled it down to as little as four.
One offensive area in which Gilas thrived was in getting to the rim and scoring inside, as they shot 52 percent from two-point range.
This third-quarter layup from Jio Jalalon, courtesy of Sports5, is an example of how Gilas enjoyed their greatest success:
Jalalon was the only guard to have a strong game for the Philippines, as he tied for the team lead with 18 points and was the only player to hit a trifecta.
South Korea's balance was too much to contend with, and the duo of Sekeun Oh and Lee Junghyun was difficult to slow down (14 points apiece). Gilas also received only 34 points from their starting lineup compared to 52 for South Korea.
The Philippines will have a chance to bounce back Thursday with a game against Iraq; South Korea, meanwhile, will battle Canada with first place on the line.
