WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from July 18
After almost eight months on the WWE Network, it feels like the only person who has gained more exposure thanks to 205 Live is Neville.
The King of the Cruiserweights was languishing in midcard limbo for a long time before he was given the opportunity to turn heel and dominate the smaller competitors in the division.
His title reign has been great for him, but it has kept a lot of deserving Superstars from reaching their fullest potential due to the low quality of every other storyline on the show.
We might get a title match at every Raw pay-per-view, but 205 Live has been featuring more bouts with stipulations recently to help increase interest in the brand.
This week included a 2-out-of-3 falls match between Mustafa Ali and Drew Gulak as the final chapter in their feud.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on Tuesday's show.
Mustafa Ali vs. Drew Gulak (2-out-of-3 Falls)
1 of 3
The match that should have been the main event kicked things off when Ali came to the ring to battle Gulak in a battle of ground-based wrestling versus high-flying offense.
In a surprising moment, Ali managed to pick up the first fall with a solid pinning combination to show off his technical ability. This visibly frustrated Gulak, so he came back looking for redemption.
The submission specialist picked up the second fall after he forced Ali to tap out to a dragon sleeper. The execution was a little off because Ali fell when it was applied, but Gulak refusing to break the hold made him look like a vicious heel.
This was a decent showing for both men, but a lack of interest from the crowd during the slow points made if come off as more boring on television than it should have.
A few exciting spots woke everyone up during the final third, and they gave both men a chance to look more versatile than they have up to this point in their WWE careers.
Gulak thought about taking to the skies, but his hesitation allowed Ali to hit his inverted 450 to get the pin. This turned out to be much better than expected, and hopefully it will lead to great things for both competitors.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Gulak was saddled with an awful gimmick, but he has shown real passion in recent weeks. It has helped make him more entertaining than anyone thought he could become with this character.
- Gulak's generic entrance music is way better than Ali's song with full lyrics.
- Ali, along with several cruiserweights, would benefit from the same kind of video packages WWE recently played for Roderick Strong in NXT. It helped the fans care more about his character, which is what so many talents on 205 Live need right now.
- Gulak's head was spiked right into the mat during a reverse hurricanrana. It was a brutal spot, but he kept going like a champ.
The Brian Kendrick vs. a British Jobber
2 of 3
The Brian Kendrick came out for a match against a random jobber who happened to be from Manchester, England.
He berated the young wrestler and insulted everyone in England at the same time. The Wizard of Odd made it his mission to make an example out of this kid, and he did just that.
Kendrick dominated the entire match before finishing off his opponent with his trademark Captain's Hook submission.
While this made Kendrick look dangerous, it did nothing to advance his feud with Jack Gallagher.
Grade: C-
Notes and Highlights
- Kendrick is so good at being a heel that he managed to raise the grade with his pre-match promo. It would have been a D otherwise.
- Why didn't Gallagher come out to help his fellow countryman? It would have been the gentlemanly thing to do.
Ariya Daivari vs. Akira Tozawa
3 of 3
The final match of the night featured Ariya Daivari taking on a bandaged Akira Tozawa. Titus O'Neil was not at ringside after the Japanese fighter apparently dumped him as his representative last week.
Daivari immediately focused all his attention on the injured shoulder of Tozawa, and it gave him the opportunity to look more dangerous than he has appeared in the past.
Tozawa sold his injury perfectly, but it limited what he was able to do. However, he was able to pick up the win thanks to a handful of Daivari's trunks.
The Persian Lion got the last laugh by driving Tozawa's shoulder into the ring post, so this feud will likely continue for the next few weeks.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- Daivari is starting to feel like an Iranian copy of Jinder Mahal. He just needs two small cohorts and he'll be all set.
- WWE should bring back Shawn Daivari and have the brothers form a tag team. It's the only way Ariya could reasonably expect to win a title at this point.
- It's always a little weird when a babyface cheats to win.
