Mexico limped through parts of the group phase due to a lack of star talent, but they still had enough in the locker to advance as winners of Group C.
They now face Honduras who grabbed one of the best third-place qualification berths after earning four points, thanks mainly to the 3-0 win awarded to them after French Guiana fielded ineligible player Florent Malouda in their starting lineup.
El Tri left it to the final match to wrap up the group, beating Curacao, who failed to score at the tournament after conceding six goals.
According to FIFA, the Hondurans are ranked No. 72 in the world and have also failed to score in this tournament so far.
However, the Mexicans are many people's favourites to advance to the last four of the competition.

The United States were unbeaten in the group stage but conceded against opposition who shouldn't penetrate their defence.
Martinique found the net against the Stars and Stripes, and the Americans need to improve during the knockouts against robust sides.
Jamaica have shown their stubbornness in the competition, and they will be tricky to beat as they face Canada.
The Reggae Boyz frustrated Mexico in their recent encounter, but they lack the firepower to support their rigid core.
Costa Rica and Panama will provide an entertaining match, and both teams have the potential to make it to the final.
La Sele have genuine aspirations to advance further after dominating Group A as they scored five times.
Panama are unbeaten as they tied with the United States on points, and they have a wealth of attacking talent to supplement their ambitions.
Prediction to Advance: Panama, United States, Jamaica and Mexico
