WWE Raw Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from July 17

Erik BeastonJul 18, 2017

The road to SummerSlam continued Monday night as WWE presented an episode of Raw that further brought the brand's top stories to the forefront, giving the audience a taste of what it can expect from the flagship show as the August 20 extravaganza approaches.

Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose healed old wounds before turning their attention on The Miz and his Miztourage.

Big Cass proved he does not fear The Big Show and will not hesitate to continue beating former partner Enzo Amore down if he continues to get in his way.

The Revival defeated The Hardy Boyz, and in the night's most memorable moment, Jason Jordan was revealed to be the illegitimate love child of Kurt Angle.

Those Superstars were among the most buzzworthy of the July 17 broadcast. Some benefited from strong booking and emotional storytelling, while others were left to wilt under the bright spotlight.

Who earned "winner" status, and who was not quite as lucky?

Winners: The Revival

1 of 5

The Revival returned to in-ring action on Raw for the first time in months Monday night, squaring off with The Hardy Boyz in what was a dream match of sorts. The ground-and-pound specialists beat down the high-flying, risk-taking, death-defying future Hall of Famers and scored a fairly clean victory.

Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder hardly missed a beat, delivering the type of performance they became synonymous with during their time in NXT. Together, they knocked off former tag team champions but did so in a manner that allows a prospective rivalry to continue if management so wishes.

The Revival has been WWE's best tag team for the better part of two years, so to see them back on television after an ill-timed injury to Wilder, winning matches against one of the premier tag teams of all time, is immensely rewarding for the audience.

Especially after so many NXT acts have failed to translate in the same manner in which they did in Full Sail University.

Loser: Jason Jordan

2 of 5

In Monday's most newsworthy moment, Jason Jordan was revealed as Kurt Angle's illegitimate son.

The moment should have been a star-making one for the talented, former amateur wrestler, but Jordan's arrival was met with silence from fans in Nashville who were expecting the Raw debut of Dixie Carter or the revelation of some love child with Stephanie McMahon.

They wanted a scandala throwback to the controversy and outlandish story arcs of the Attitude Era.

Instead, they got a watered-down reveal that felt safe rather than worthy of the months-long mystery.

Now, it will be up to Jordan, Angle and WWE Creative to tell a story that compels fans because nothing about the "grand" reveal Monday night inspired excitement or intrigue on the part of the WWE Universe.

If not, this may be the final opportunity for Jordan to hit it big in WWE, especially after a disappointing run on SmackDown Live with Chad Gable in American Alpha.

Winner: Big Cass

3 of 5

Big Cass continued his monster push Monday night, interrupting another passionate Enzo Amore promo. From there, he proceeded to beat down The Big Show, leaving the giant lying. He put an exclamation point on the night with a big boot to Amore, who crumbled to the mat at the feet of his former tag team partner.

While last week's cowardly retreat may have been a speed bump of sorts, this week's booking continued Cass' rise up the ranks, proving no aggressive giant or silver-tongued G will prevent him from achieving greatness on the flagship show.

The crowd reacted to Cass just as management hoped, booing his vile and relentless assault on The World's Largest Athlete. It despised Cass' boot to Amore and the confidence he displayed.

By scripting him to say the least amount possible while showcasing an aggression fans had not previously seen out of him, WWE Creative is accentuating Cass' positives and hiding his negatives at a vital time for his character.

It will help him in the long term and set him up for the success others have not had in similar situations.

Loser: The Cruiserweight Division

4 of 5

Without Neville to provide a spark, the dire situation that is the WWE cruiserweight division became even more apparent Monday night.

Creative presented two matches, neither of which sparked the interest of the Nashville fans, regardless of the talent involved.

Jack Gallagher, Mustafa Ali, The Brian Kendrick, Drew Gulak, Akira Tozawa and Ariya Daivari may represent a crop of talented Superstars, but unfamiliarity with their ongoing rivalries and characters has created an apathy among WWE fans. Only the devoted viewers of 205 Live have managed to form even the slightest connection with the Superstars.

Devoting so much attention to champion Neville, and so little to developing characters and contenders who could present a credible and legitimate challenge to The King of the Cruiserweights, has doomed the division to the current state of mediocrity it finds itself in.

Unfortunately for the talented individuals involved, it does not appear as though that will change anytime soon.

Winner: Seth Rollins

5 of 5

It took almost one full year to happen, but Seth Rollins finally demonstrated the character evolution necessary for him to succeed as a truly great babyface.

Monday night, he said "I'm sorry" to former tag team partner and friend Dean Ambrose. The previously egotistical WWE champion recognized the mistake he had made some three years ago and apologized to The Lunatic Fringe for his actions.

Not only was his apology directed toward Ambrose, it felt like an apology directed at the WWE Universe. In that moment, he was apologizing for the shocking betrayal of his teammates but also for taking The Shield away from the fans who lived and breathed vicariously through the cool, young, unstoppable trio.

By turning his back on Ambrose and telling him to hit him, to wash away the anger and frustration of the last three years, Rollins accepted responsibility for his actions and was willing to make amends.

There is nothing the general public likes more than a redemption story. They want a wrongdoer to admit their mistake and work to grow into the person they know he or she can be. Thanks to a superb opening segment Monday night, the audience has one such story and a Superstar it can throw its support behind.
