Arsene Wenger Says Alexis Sanchez Won't Be Sold Amid Manchester City Rumours
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted the Gunners will stick to their decision not to sell Alexis Sanchez despite him only having a year left on his current contract.
Per John Cross in the Mirror, Sanchez has expressed his desire to play in next season's UEFA Champions League—which Arsenal will not be in—and Manchester City have been heavily linked with the Chilean, but Wenger said the club's position has not changed: "The decision has been made and we will stick to that. The decision is not to sell."
Wenger also brushed off Sanchez's comments about playing in the Champions League, per Cross: "I don’t give too much importance to things that are translated, you know. The whole interview that I got didn’t really mean that."
Per Sami Mokbel in the Daily Mail, much of Arsenal's 2016-17 campaign was dominated by ongoing concerns as to whether Sanchez would put pen to paper on new terms and commit himself to the club past 2018.
He never did sign a new deal and Arsenal will risk losing him for free next summer if they do insist on keeping hold of him.
Given that the 28-year-old Chile international is arguably Arsenal's best player it could be worth the losses to keep him on for another season as the Gunners will be attempting to return to the Premier League's top four next term.
However, it is also possible they could raise significant funds for reinvestment by selling him this summer, as not only have City been linked with him, but also the similarly moneyed Paris Saint-Germain, per L'Equipe (via Sport Witness):
For now Arsenal are standing strong on their insistence Sanchez will not be sold. But the situation could possibly change if he tries to force his way out or another club comes in with a healthy offer.
