WWE Rumors: Buzz on Road to WWE Battleground 2017 for Week of July 10
WWE is a week-and-a-half out from Battleground, and the buzz is sort of quiet.
Most of this week's rumors concern the larger plans for SummerSlam or the Raw superstars rather than the SmackDown superstars, even though Battleground is a SmackDown exclusive.
Raw is winning the battle of momentum between the two shows, but hopefully Battleground will give SmackDown some much-needed forward inertia headed into the Biggest Party of the Summer.
Here are the best WWE rumors for the week of July 10.
A Triple Threat or a 4-Way?
1 of 4For a while, the rumors were that Roman Reigns would take on Brock Lesnar for the universal title, according to David Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Now, however, it seems there has been a change in plans. According to Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats, the main event could now be a Triple Threat or even a Fatal 4-Way.
For many WWE fans, this will come as welcome news. Reigns versus Lesnar has already been done, but a superfight that throws Samoa Joe (or even Finn Balor) into the mix could be interesting.
For Joe, SummerSlam could be the perfect chance for him to clinch the title, since he came so close to doing it at Great Balls of Fire.
For Balor, SummerSlam could be a chance for redemption; it was at last year's event that he became the Universal title's inaugural champion before being forced to relinquish it due to injury.
What Happened to the Fireworks?
2 of 4WWE fans may have noticed a distinct lack of pyro at recent television tapings—both at the show openings and during the wrestlers' entrances.
According to Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Nick Paglino of Wrestle Zone), this is a cost-cutting measure. WWE officials have also decided that the pyro is largely unnecessary.
Like everything else on WWE programming, though, pyro is a storytelling advice—a way to build mood and create an atmosphere of importance and excitement.
If there isn't money in the budget, that's one thing, but pyro is certainly important. It is such a signature element of WWE programming (the entrances of the Undertaker, Booker T and Kurt Angle, to name a few) that it's hard not to feel nostalgic over its absence.
The Drifter Is Adrift
3 of 4Guitar-playing, moody Elias Samson has been a staple on Raw. He always gets at least a song, if not a match, every week. And WWE officials really like him, although there are still reservations about pulling the trigger on a big push.
According to Jeff Whalen at Rajah.com, WWE likes Samson's look but is still concerned about his in-ring work. His Raw match against Finn Balor on July 10 got mixed reviews backstage.
Samson was not in NXT for long before debuting on the main roster. Did WWE promote him too quickly? Could he have worked on his fundamentals at the WWE Performance Center for another year before making the big move?
It's the sort of problem that has plagued other NXT alumni before, from Emma to Carmella to Apollo Crews. Hopefully, this won't continue to be a pattern.
Enzo Amore Is Getting Miz'd
4 of 4And lastly, here's a crazy rumor about Enzo Amore getting kicked off a tour bus.
The reasons aren't absolutely clear, but, according the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc.), Enzo committed a major faux pas having to do with the business several weeks ago).
It was so major that Roman Reigns kicked him off WWE's tour bus, and Enzo was forced to change outside the locker room.
This echoes a much-reported incident in The Miz's debut year, when he was forced to change outside the locker room for six months after eating chicken over a referee's bag.
Apparently, the Wrestler's Court is alive and well, even though Undertaker isn't there to serve as judge and jury and even though WWE is a publicly traded company.
Apparently, Enzo may be over with the fans, but he isn't nearly as over with his co-workers.
