Romelu Lukaku Tells ESPN FC That Manchester United Is 'the Perfect Opportunity'
Romelu Lukaku said he is taking "the perfect opportunity" to join the "biggest club in the world" on the cusp of his transfer from Everton to Manchester United.
The Red Devils announced on Saturday that a fee had been struck between the two clubs for the Belgium international striker. Speaking to ESPN FC's Alexis Nunes prior to the move's official confirmation, Lukaku shared his delight.
"I would say, 'Who would say no to the biggest club in the world?'" Lukaku said when asked why he was keen to join United. "Best stadium in England. The best fans. This is the perfect opportunity. I always said I wanted to play for a team that's challenging for every trophy that there is."
As the report noted, Chelsea, Lukaku's former club, were also interested in signing the striker, although the 24-year-old revealed his "mind was already set" on linking up with the Red Devils.
Lukaku has gone through the formalities ahead of his official unveiling as a United player. As Beyond the Pitch's Pilib De Brun reported, he even signed a Red Devils shirt:
Lukaku also posted pictures on social media during what has been reported to have been his medical. Football journalist Tom McDermott shared one, with Lukaku suggesting the examination had been done:
According to Steve Millar of the Daily Star Sunday, the Red Devils may part with as much as £100 million for the striker, with £85 million reportedly being paid up front.
United captain Wayne Rooney headed in the opposite direction to re-sign with his boyhood club, the Toffees announced on Sunday. Here's how they'd both look in different colours next term:
United are signing one of the Premier League's most dangerous forwards in Lukaku. The ex-Anderlecht man netted 25 times in the top flight during the 2016-17 season, getting the better of defenders with his pace and power.
What will excite Red Devils supporters most is his ruthless finishing, especially given how profligate the team was last season. Lukaku, whether on his preferred left foot, weaker right foot or with his head, is an expert at sticking chances away.
Factor in his unashamed ambition and determination to succeed, and it's easy to believe the striker will be a big hit at Old Trafford.
