2017 MLB All-Star Roster: Complete AL, NL Lineups and Game Schedule
Much will be made of the Home Run Derby Monday night, featuring huge sluggers Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins, but make no mistake about it, the All-Star Game Tuesday night is the primary attraction next week at Marlins Park in Miami.
The All-Star Game is the 88th in the series, and it will be televised on Fox at 8 p.m. ET. This year's game has a chance to be one of the more historic games in the series. The National League leads the all-time series, 43-42-2, but the American League has had its way since 1988.

The American League has put together a 22-6-1 clip in that time, and a win Tuesday night will tie the series. The last time the two teams were even was 1964โJohnny Callison of the Philadelphia Phillies hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at New York's Shea Stadium to give the NL a 7-4 win.
The National League won the following year to take the lead in the series for the first time, and they have been leading ever since.

The All-Star Game was a different kind of event a couple of generations ago. During the 1960s and '70s, the National League had the dominant stars in the game, including Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Johnny Bench and Willie McCovey, and the Senior Circuit dominated.
In addition to a mismatch in terms of slugging talent, the National League had an edge in pitching with Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton, as well as the edge in the hustle department with Pete Rose.
The American League had players like Frank Robinson (an ex-National Leaguer), Brooks Robinson, Carl Yastrzemski and Al Kaline, but they could not match up with the National League stars. The National Leaguers won 19 of 20 All-Star Games between 1963 and 1982.
It has been a different story for three decades, and this year's American League team features the slugging Judge, Mookie Betts of the Boston Red Sox, Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve and George Springer of the Houston Astros and Sal Perez of the Kansas City Royals. The American Leaguers have won the last four All-Star Games.
The National League side should have a fighting chance with Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals, Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies, Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants and Daniel Murphy of the Nationals.
This game could provide one of the best pitching matchups in recent memory. While neither Joe Maddon of the Chicago Cubs nor Terry Francona of the Cleveland Indians (hospitalized Tuesday and Wednesday for medical tests) has announced his starting pitcher yet, it could be Chris Sale of the Red Sox against Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers.ย
Those two may be the best in baseball, and they are capable of making the top hitters in the game look silly when they are on their game.
Perhaps Maddon will let Kershaw pitch two innings, and Francona could do the same with Sale. However, don't expect any other pitcher to throw more than one inning.
That's just one of the ways the game has changed. The National League used to enjoy its domination while the American Leaguers grew frustrated by losing.
It doesn't seem like the American League has taken anywhere near as much pride in its modern-day winning ways, and the National Leaguers don't seem upset about their losing.
This year's game is not tied to the World Series. Since 2003, the winner of the All-Star Game earned home-field advantage for its league, but that practice ended with commissioner Rob Manfred's offseason ruling ending that practice.
Instead of gaining home field for the winning league, the players will earn $20,000 each for winning the game. The losers won't earn any money.
While $20,000 may not seem like much to the multi-millionaires playing the game, players may be motivated by not losing and bringing home a paycheck for their efforts.
