WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from July 4
When it comes to the sheer level of talent, the cruiserweight division in WWE has some of the best performers in the world.
Unfortunately, the storylines and matches don't always live up to their potential. Every week we see the same handful of people competing in an endless cycle.
However unlikely it seemed at first, Titus O'Neil has actually managed to bring a little variety to the show by positioning himself as Akira Tozawa's representative.
The former tag team champion struggled to find his place on the roster after breaking up The Prime Time Players, but he has settled into his new role nicely.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of 205 Live.
Titus Worldwide
1 of 4
After taking a phone call and trying to recruit a few other cruiserweights to his stable, O'Neil kicked things off with a segment in the ring.
For some reason, Tozawa was absent. This gave O'Neil a chance to push his Titus Worldwide initiative, but he was quickly interrupted by Neville.
The cruiserweight champion called his brand a facade and played a clip of Braun Strowman tearing through Apollo Crews and O'Neil on Raw.
It seemed like this was going to lead to a physical confrontation, but Neville ended up facing Lince Dorado in the first match of the night instead.
O'Neil has shown more comfort in his current role over the past few weeks, but it's still difficult to pinpoint what his real motivations are.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- O'Neil made a dated Rush Hour reference when talking to Tozawa on the phone backstage.
- Is he still supposed to be a heel? It's kind of hard to tell these days.
- Neville is one of the few heels who don't need to lie to get heat.
Lince Dorado vs. Neville
2 of 4
Dorado used his enviable speed and agility to get the upper hand right away. Neville has been dominant in most of his matches, so it was nice to see someone give him a challenge.
Unfortunately for Dorado, Neville is just as quick and twice as strong, so it didn't take him long to recover and take control.
This ended up being a short match, but the exciting moves performed by Dorado made it fun. Neville picked up the win with the Rings of Saturn.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- WWE should take a handful of the cruiserweights and form some tag teams to give them something to do while they wait for title shots. Dorado would do well with one of the other masked Superstars struggling to find a place on the roster.
- It looked awkward when the crew was getting rid of Titus' red carpet and posters during Dorado's entrance.
- On that subject, did O'Neil really need his own set in the ring for what ended up being a two-minute segment?
Jack Gallagher vs. Tony Nese
3 of 4
The second match of the evening saw Gentleman Jack Gallagher battle The Premier Athlete Tony Nese. These two are about as different as you can get, but they have always had good chemistry.
The crowd showed a little more enthusiasm for this bout than it has in the past, and it helped make the match feel a little more exciting to hear people getting invested.
After Gallagher got the win with a running corner dropkick, The Brian Kendrick appeared on the big screen dressed in some colonial era attire to taunt his newest rival.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- For two guys who have never had a real storyline together, Gallagher and Nese have fought each other numerous times.
- Nese needs to use more of the high-flying offense we saw during the Cruiserweight Classic. He was one of the most exciting performers during the tournament, but he has faded into obscurity by focusing on being one of the powerhouses of the division.
- You know Kendrick is a good heel when he can get heat on July 4 while saying America is better than Great Britain.
Rich Swann vs. TJP
4 of 4
TJP and Rich Swann had a conversation backstage where it appeared they were back to being buddies, but TJP still wanted this match so they could have a little friendly competition.
Both men are known for their quickness and versatility, so this match was high energy from the moment they locked up.
There was a moment where it looked like TJP was going to take advantage of Swann being injured outside the ring, but he ended up choosing to take the high road and allowed him to recover and beat a count-out.
We have seen better performances from both competitors, but they still stole the show with this main event. The crowd showed its appreciation with chants of "This is awesome."
After one of the most competitive matches of the week, Swann got the win after a series of near-fall pinning combinations. TJP looked shocked at the outcome, but he showed good sportsmanship by embracing his friend to end the show.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Noam Dar declared his intent to pursue the cruiserweight title in the near future, but Alicia Fox is still obsessed with Cedric Alexander.
- Swann finally got a new ring jacket, but it's the same tuxedo cut as his last one.
- Corey Graves mocking dabbing makes me like him so much more than I already did.
