WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from June 27
The cruiserweight division still feels a bit out of place in WWE, but we have seen some forward momentum in recent weeks.
Having the Superstars interact with the rest of the roster is helping it feel as though 205 Live is actually part of WWE's main programming instead of a gimmick.
Titus O'Neil might be annoying sometimes, but his storyline with Akira Tozawa has helped the Japanese dynamo get more exposure, which is always a good thing.
Alicia Fox's feud with Noam Dar and Cedric Alexander has overstayed its welcome, but at least it has given two talented wrestlers a chance to make an impression on the WWE Universe.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of 205 Live.
The Brian Kendrick vs. Jack Gallagher
1 of 4Gentleman Jack Gallagher gave a quick interview backstage with Dasha Fuentes before heading to the ring to battle The Brian Kendrick.
Both men have a lot of little tricks they use to put their opponents off their game, but Gallagher never saw Kendrick's impression coming.
The Wizard of Odd came out dressed like Gallagher, complete with and umbrella and a fake mustache over his own goatee. He kept the suit on during the match, but it didn't hinder his performance.
Kendrick hasn't been utilized as much recently as he was when the division first launched, so it's great to see him back to playing mind games. He got himself disqualified when he used his umbrella to attack Gallagher, but it felt like the right finish.
This feud is just getting going, so having either man suffer a clean loss right away wouldn't help anyone. Their next encounter should be much better.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- Corey Graves did a great job putting over the women's Money in the Bank match at the top of the show. He is so good at getting his message across in a few seconds, which is not something you can say about every commentator.
- It was surprising to see Kendrick's wig stay in place for as long as it did.
- The crowd still seemed to be pumped up from the SmackDown main event. It helped this match get a better reaction than it normally would have received.
Mustafa Ali vs. Drew Gulak
2 of 4
Drew Gulak gave an interview before the match and tried to point out how Mustafa Ali defeating him last week without using a high-flying move was good for his crusade to stop people from taking unnecessary risks.
They started off with some quick counters and takedowns, giving this match more intensity than their last encounter. Both men did a good job conveying their hatred for each other, especially when Gulak punched Ali right in the face as hard as he could.
Gulak went against his own advice and tried to deliver a splash from the top rope, but Ali avoided him and used a crucifix pin to pick up the victory.
This wasn't an amazing match, but it did a decent job pushing their storyline along.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- Gulak is an incredibly talented technical wrestler. It's sad to see him being booked to look so ridiculous.
- The crowd was completely silent during Gulak's entrance.
- At least he was able to get in some vicious offense in this match to look more dangerous.
- WWE should make some video packages for Ali as it recently did for Roderick Strong in NXT. It helped people get a better idea of who he is as a person and a wrestler. In fact, half the 205 Live roster would benefit from the same treatment.
Cedric Alexander vs. Ariya Daivari
3 of 4Before the match, Dar apologized to Ariya Daivari for accidentally throwing his expensive bag in the river last week, but The Persian Lion brushed it off like a $15,000 bag isn't worth it to him. Foxy called Dar, but Daivari grabbed the phone, hung up on her and threw it into the wall.
Cedric Alexander's agility and speed were on full display in this bout, but Daivari was able to get in some decent offense to keep himself from looking like a total jobber.
As expected, The Scottish Supernova came down to distract Alexander. He ended up getting knocked off the apron, but his ploy worked and Daivari was able to pick up what feels like his first win in quite some time with a nasty clothesline.
After attacking his rival, Dar addressed Foxy and said they are done with Alexander and it's time to move on. The odds of this actually happening are slim.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- Daivari hip-tossing Alexander into the corner looked painful.
- Daivari's finisher takes a little too long to set up, but it looks great when he hits it just right.
- If this is the end of Dar and Alexander's feud, one of them needs to go after the title. Both men are talented and deserve a better storyline than what they have been saddled with.
The King of the Cruiserweights Addresses the Peasants
4 of 4
Instead of a real main event, Neville came out to deliver a promo directed at Tozawa. Just as always, he promised to retain his Cruiserweight Championship at Great Balls of Fire.
Tozawa eventually made an appearance, but instead of coming up with an intelligent response, he grunted at Neville over and over.
This upset The King of the Cruiserweights, which was exactly what Tozawa wanted. The champ tried to attack his challenger, but he was quickly sent out of the ring with a few well-placed kicks.
This segment was short, but it accomplished its goal of hyping their upcoming title match.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- Not having O'Neil involved in this segment was the right choice. He could be a great manager someday, but having him aligned with Tozawa doesn't make much sense.
- How does one know if they are on the Neville level? Is there a test we can take?
- This was a lukewarm episode of 205 Live. Nothing was terrible, but we didn't get any memorable matches or segment either.
