WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from June 27

Erik BeastonJun 27, 2017

History was made Tuesday night on WWE SmackDown Live as five women competed in the first televised Money in the Bank ladder match, each looking to leave with the coveted guaranteed championship opportunity Carmella once thought to be hers.

After controversy reigned at the June 18 pay-per-view, she was stripped of the honor and Tuesday night, a new Miss Money in the Bank would be crowned. Would it be "Lass Kicker" Becky Lynch, second-generation star Charlotte Flair, "Queen of Harts" Natalya, Tamina or the disgraced former briefcase holder?

Supporting the match was a major revelation from WWE champion Jinder Mahal that his Battleground rematch with Randy Orton will be inside the rarely used Punjabi Prison.

The Hype Bros had their chance to earn a tag title shot, Baron Corbin squared off with Sami Zayn and Naomi defended her women's title against Lana to round out another action-packed episode of SmackDown Live.

Carmella Interrupts Daniel Bryan

1 of 6

General manager Daniel Bryan kicked off Tuesday's show to a monster pop, proving once and for all the emotional connection he has with the audience remains intact.

Excited to make history, he addressed the WWE Universe, only to be interrupted by a discontented Carmella and James Ellsworth.

Carmella reiterated her stance from last week, that she was done wrong by the authority figure. Ellsworth was more outspoken, claiming Bryan was spineless, gutless and created a fake injury because he could no longer cut it in the ring.

Bryan responded by having security remove Ellsworth from the arena while Carmella begged the GM to reconsider his decision.

The former Money in the Bank winner was left looking dejected as we headed to break.

Analysis

This was a fine way to kick off the show. While Carmella's argument may have felt like a rehash from last week, it reaffirms her stance for an audience who may be tuning in for the first time in a while specifically to see the historic main event.

Furthermore, it eliminated Ellsworth from the equation, ensuring Carmella will have to go it alone if she wishes to regain the briefcase.

Simple, effective storytelling to kick off what should be a red-hot broadcast.

The Hype Bros vs. The Usos

2 of 6

The Hype Bros believe they are the rightful No. 1 contenders having won a title opportunity last December, the same night Zack Ryder obliterated his knee.

Ryder and Mojo Rawley frustrated the champions early, wiping them out at ringside following a tope from Long Island Iced-Z himself. An enzuigiri from Jey Uso following a distraction from brother Jimmy allowed the champions to take control.

Back from the commercial break, Ryder found himself on the receiving end of a superkick and top-rope splash combination as The Usos won what was an abbreviated match.

After the bell, The New Day hit the ring and verbally confronted the champions.

The result of the promo?

A rematch for the titles at the July 23 pay-per-view, Battleground.

Result

The Usos defeated The Hype Bros.

Analysis

There might not be a burial worse than getting beaten coming right out of the commercial break.

Who knows if the match was cut for time or if this was the intended result, but Ryder and Rawley look like glorified jobbers after that finish. What was the point of attaching the "if they win, they are No. 1 contenders" stipulation if they were going to be so thoroughly dismissed?

The post-match New Day promo was typically solid stuff that furthered the rivalry with The Usos and set up their rematch from Money in the Bank.

SmackDown Women's Championship Match: Naomi vs. Lana

3 of 6

In another rematch from Money in the Bank, Naomi defended the SmackDown Women's Championship against Lana.

The Ravishing Russian attacked at the bell, but the champion fought back and delivered a split-legged moonsault to score the sudden victory.

Result

Naomi defeated Lana.

Grade

A

Analysis

Lana as the overzealous, unprepared wrestler is a great role for her.

Primarily because it is true.

At Money in the Bank, her deficiencies were highlighted in a match that went on entirely too long. Tuesday, she was beaten quickly, her eagerness to attack lulling her into a false sense of security that Naomi quickly took advantage of.

Lana will likely be a major part of the division's future, but for now, she has considerable work to do before she ever sniffs championship contention again.

Naomi continues to roll, perhaps the most underappreciated champion on the entire WWE roster.

Randy Orton Promo

4 of 6

Still fuming over the Singh Brothers putting their hands on his father at Money in the Bank, Randy Orton hit the ring and vowed that what he did to Jinder Mahal last week will pale in comparison to what he does to him from here on out.

He promised to attack Mahal every day until he gets what he wants: a rematch for the WWE Championship.

Commissioner Shane McMahon interrupted the proceedings and sympathized with Orton, saying he understands the fury that courses through a man when his family is threatened.

With that in mind, he revealed Orton will have his rematch at Battleground, but under the condition that Mahal chooses the stipulation.

The WWE champion appeared and revealed the match between him and The Viper will be...a Punjabi Prison match. The opponents stared each other down to bring the segment to a close.

Analysis

And with that, Battleground has its main event.

Many will laugh at the idea of the Punjabi Prison match returning to WWE after the first two installments were less than stellar, but given the oversaturation of ladder, tables and cage matches, dusting off a fresh and unusual gimmick bout is a nice change of pace.

It was funny to hear McMahon discuss others putting their hands on his family when it was Orton, himself, who physically assaulted Stephanie McMahon eight years ago, necessitating Shane's return to the squared circle in 2009.

Thank goodness WWE Creative does not pay attention to continuity as closely as it should.

Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin

5 of 6

Sami Zayn has a habit of being involved in never-ending rivalries, such as his war with Kevin Owens and his increasingly overexposed program with Baron Corbin.

The Underdog from the Underground squared off with the Lone Wolf, again, Tuesday night.

Prior to the match, Zayn interrupted Mike and Maria Kanellis' Power of Love segment, perhaps hinting at a program between the men.

Mr. Money in the Bank seized control of the match just before the break, dropping Zayn face-first into the guardrail. Back from the commercial, Corbin flattened his opponent with a lariat for a close near-fall.

Zayn fought back, catching Corbin with a high cross-body block that flattened the former Arizona Cardinal for a count of two. At every turn, though, Corbin cut off his opponent's flurries.

Moments after fighting out of a superplex attempt, Zayn ran into End of Days as Corbin scored another impressive win.

Result

Baron Corbin defeated Sami Zayn.

Analysis

Shinsuke Nakamura watched from backstage during the match and afterward, in an interview with Dasha Fuentes, suggested Corbin should be afraid of what he can do. That would suggest Corbin vs. Nakamura will eventually be made official for Battleground.

If that is the case, fans will have a fresh match on their hands.

For Corbin, it would present the opportunity for him to work with a world-renowned star whose resume speaks for itself. The knowledge he could acquire from working with the former NXT champion is endless and the credibility essential to his ascension to the top of the card.

As long as the Lone Wolf stays away from Zayn for a few weeks, all is well.

Speaking of the underdog, he remains disappointingly directionless, just a guy in a sea of them.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match

6 of 6

Carmella was forced to battle for the right to win her second Money in the Bank briefcase in nine days but to do so, she would have to defeat Charlotte, Becky Lynch, Natalya and Tamina in Tuesday's night much-anticipated main event.

Early, Carmella capitalized on the women around her fighting on the floor and set up the ladder, getting several rungs up before her opponents pulled her off.

Tamina caught Lynch with a big slash that left The Lass Kicker writhing in pain.

Back from the break, three of the women were sprawled out on the arena floor, the action clearly taking a toll. Natalya, recovered, attacked Charlotte with a nasty suplex. On the floor, Tamina caught a superkick attempt from Carmella and sent her over the broadcast table.

Charlotte dumped Natalya out of the ring, where Lynch caught her and delivered a Bexploder suplex. At one point, Lynch scaled a ladder held onto by Charlotte and Tamina, nearly winning the match in the process.

Carmella tipped a ladder with Charlotte and Natalya, only to be sent to the floor by Lynch. Tamina responded by obliterating The Lass Kicker with a spear.

Natalya was in clear control following the break, scaling the ladder until Charlotte interrupted her ascension. Lynch and Tamina joined in but all four crashed and burned.

Carmella climbed the ladder but her opponents lifted the ladder and moved her and it away from the title. She responded with a high cross-body block to Natalya and Lynch.

Charlotte and Carmella climbed the ladder, but Tamina, pinned under the ladder, tipped it over.

Late in the match, James Ellsworth appeared and nearly recreated the pay-per-view finish, but Lynch tipped the ladder over. Just as The Lass Kicker was on her way to victory, Carmella pulled her off the ladder, tweaking her knee in the process.

Lynch tried to climb the ladder, but Carmella caught her with a chair to the knee. A second chair shot allowed The Princess of Staten Island to climb the ladder and score the win.

Result

Carmella defeated Tamina, Natalya, Charlotte and Becky Lynch.

Grade

A+

Analysis

This was not only a vast improvement over the Money in the Bank pay-per-view match, it was a smartly wrestled bout that assembled a series of spots and plot devices to tell a thoroughly entertaining story.

Tamina was positioned as the dominant force of the match straight through until the closing moments. Lynch and Charlotte were very obviously presented as the stars, while Carmella stuck around long enough to suggest she would factor into the finish.

And she did.

First, the teased Ellsworth finish was brilliant. Fans erupted into a chorus of boos as he appeared, thinking they may once again witness a screwy outcome. They did, but not for the reasons they suspected.

Lynch coming up short once again, this time after Carmella utilized a chair to take out her knee, riled up the audience and suggests it may be more behind the Irishwoman than it is the apparent chosen one, Charlotte.

Carmella surviving and winning the match was the right call and sets up what could be a star-making turn as Miss Money in the Bank. The briefcase gimmick fits her well, as it provides the opportunity for a sneaky, underhanded win to go along with her two victories in the ladder match.
