Zach Randolph Says He Wants to Build Superteam with Memphis Grizzlies
Zach Randolph may turn 36 years old in July, but the veteran forward has big dreams for the Memphis Grizzlies.
Randolph told TMZ Sports he wants to see the Grizzlies follow the trend of superteams and build a stacked roster in Memphis. His comments begin at the 47-second mark of the video below:
Randolph is likely well aware how difficult creating a superteam would be for the Grizzlies.
For one thing, Memphis is nearly $32 million over the salary cap, according to Spotrac. The trio of Randolph, Vince Carter and Tony Allen account for over $34 million in cap holds, so the Grizzlies could create some cap space for themselves but not nearly enough to sign a marquee free agent.
There's also the problem that Memphis isn't a prime free-agent destination. Part of the rationale behind re-signing Mike Conley and Marc Gasol to max contracts was that it'd be nearly impossible to replace them.
The presence of Conley and Gasol will ensure the Grizzlies remain competitive for the foreseeable future. Given his limited financial flexibility, Memphis general manager Chris Wallace will have a hard time building a roster that can put Memphis in a position to make a deep run in the postseason, however.
