2017 World Series of Poker Update: Repeat Winners Highlight WSOP Week
Repeat winners were the storyline at the World Series of Poker this week, as David Bach and James Moore both turned the trick in different ways.
Bach became the first double bracelet winner of this year's WSOP after conquering the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship. The victory, which was Bach's third WSOP win overall, netted him $383,208 after he outlasted the rest of the 150-player field.
Bach, a master of mixed-game poker tournaments, picked up his first bracelet at this year's WSOP in the $1,500 Dealers Choice Six-Handed tournament. He outlasted a 364-player field in that tournament and cashed $119,399. The two tournament wins bumped Bach's career WSOP earnings over the $3 million mark.
The other repeat winner this week was James Moore. His repeat was a little different, as he amazingly won the same event in back-to-back years. Moore went the distance in the $1,000 Super Seniors No-Limit Hold'em tournament for the second consecutive year. The event, open to any player 65 years or older, drew 1,720 entries and earned Moore a cash of $259,230.
With just over half of the 2017 WSOP bracelets having been handed out, Daniel Negreanu is quickly running out of time to meet his goal of winning three bracelets this year.
Negreanu has come close with three final table appearances, but his best finish so far is second place in the $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Eight or Better Championship. He has posted seven cashes so far this year, amassing $360,776.
With so many tournaments having concluded already, it's a good time to check in on the Player of the Year standings. For the uninitiated, players accumulate points for all bracelet events at the WSOP, including the WSOP Europe, which kicks off in the Czech Republic in the fall.
The player who leads the standings after the 2017 WSOP gets a free buy-in into the WSOPE main event. The overall Player of the Year, crowned at the end of WSOPE, receives a free entry into the 2018 WSOP main event.
The current POY points leader is James Obst with 509.01. He has made four final tables, has had six cashes and won the $10,000 Razz Championship. Behind him is Pablo Mariz in second with 459.41 points, and rounding out the top three in the standings with 424.51 points is Mike Leak.
Mariz has made two final tables, posted three cashes and won the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Millionaire Maker. Leah doesn't have a win yet this year, but he has made one final table and cashed nine times.
