Derek Carr, Raiders Reportedly 'Close' to Finalizing New Contract

Joseph ZuckerJun 21, 2017

The Oakland Raiders and quarterback Derek Carr are nearing an agreement on an extension that would pay him about $25 million a year, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

According to Schefter, the contract could be completed by the end of the week. The San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur reported both the Raiders and Carr are eager to get the deal completed.

Carr tweeted about the rumors:

Should Carr's price tag reach $25 million annually, he'd become the highest-paid player in the NFL. According to SpotracIndianapolis Colts signal-caller Andrew Luck leads the league with an average salary of nearly $24.6 million a year.

Carr's stock has risen quickly since the Raiders selected him in the second round of the 2014 draft. A Pro Bowler in 2015 and 2016, he threw for 3,937 yards, 28 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Had Carr not suffered a broken fibula in December, Oakland may have challenged the New England Patriots for the AFC crown. Instead, the Raiders lost 27-14 to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round with Connor Cook under center.

Few doubted the Raiders would do everything possible to ensure Carr remained their starting quarterback for the long term. Seven different players led the team in passing between 2004 and 2013, the year before Carr arrived.
