WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from June 20

Erik BeastonJun 21, 2017

Hot on the heels of the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, SmackDown Live found itself tasked with answering one major question that had the wrestling world up in arms: how would it address the controversial conclusion to the first-ever women's ladder match?

Fans got the answer in the form of Daniel Bryan announcing a rematch for next week's show. It was Carmella, though, who earned "biggest winner" status for her performance over the course of the night.

Starting the show with considerable swag, she ended her night sobbing in a heap, her arm nearly pulled out of the socket by a vengeful Becky Lynch.

Another NXT alumnus who made waves Tuesday was Chad Gable, who answered Kevin Owens' open challenge and nearly wrestled the United States Championship away from the Prizefighter.

Not so lucky were Breezango and Maria and Mike Kanellis, all of whom were conspicuous in their absence.

Delve into why those Superstars were the most buzzworthy following Tuesday's show with this recap of the June 20 broadcast.

Winner: Carmella

Carmella was the undisputed star of Tuesday's show.

Channeling the frustration she has felt ever since being the last woman taken in the WWE Draft last July, she unloaded on fans and critics, making damn sure they knew she was remorseless following her controversial victory Sunday night at Money in the Bank.

She spoke with just enough conviction that it was easy for the viewing audience to believe she meant every word she said, which is always the sign of a quality promo.

Later in the night, when Daniel Bryan took the briefcase away from her and announced a rematch of the Money in the Bank ladder match for next week's show, the look of disbelief was perfectly executed. Sobbing in the center of the ring like a spoiled brat, grasping at the left arm that had just been hyperextended by Becky Lynch courtesy of The Disarmer, was a nice touch, too.

Coming out of Sunday's pay-per-view extravaganza, Carmella was the most talked about Superstar on the SmackDown Live roster. For the right or wrong reasons, her name was on the lips (and at the fingertips) of every fan, online analyst and wrestling critic ahead of Tuesday's broadcast.

She needed to make the absolute most of the camera time given to her character, and she did just that—like she has every time she has been put at the center of a high-profile storyline.

Carmella excelled Tuesday night to the point that taking the briefcase away from her and not letting her fulfill her destiny of cashing in and becoming the new women's champion could prove a mistake.

Losers: Maria and Mike Kanellis

2 of 4

The hotly anticipated debut of Mike and Maria Kanellis occurred Sunday night at Money in the Bank.

Tuesday, they were relegated to an untelevised segment, released exclusively to YouTube, that was greeted with near silence from the Dayton, Ohio, crowd.

Maria once again commanded attention, her voice booming over the PA system, and Mike was his smarmy, obnoxiously in love best, but the crowd did not eat the act up.

Given the manner in which the fans in St. Louis quickly turned on the couple after their grand debut, perhaps it is time to reevaluate whether the love guru gimmick is one that can realistically work in today's WWE.

If not, and it goes on too long to similar results, it may be too late to salvage the reputations of the Superstars involved.

That would be a major disappointment given how spectacularly effective they are as unlikable heels.

Winner: Chad Gable

3 of 4

For months, fans wondered where American Alpha was and why they were not being featured prominently in a resurgent tag team division.

Tuesday night, they (kind of) got their answer.

Chad Gable answered Kevin Owens' United States Championship Open Challenge and nearly upset The New Face of America. The Olympian took the champion down with repeated belly-to-back suplexes, then transitioned into an ankle lock and nearly tapped him out seconds into the bout.

Alas, an upset for the prestigious championship was not meant to be yet, but the tag team specialist provided fans with an energetic performance full of several red-hot near-falls.

Even in defeat, Gable was a legitimate winner in that he lent credibility to the new series of open challenges for the United States title while also proving he does not need a tag team partner to dazzle audiences with his fast-paced, technically sound offensive skill set.

Losers: Breezango

4 of 4

Tyler Breeze and Fandango have been among the best, most entertaining and interesting acts in all of WWE for the last two months. Their Fashion Files vignettes have gotten them over in a way that winning matches every week on television never could. They have been funny, engaging and compelling when given the opportunity to let their personalities shine.

After another amusing Fashion Vice video Sunday night at Money in the Bank, and a convincing victory over The Ascension, they were nowhere to be found Tuesday night.

Sure, WWE Creative crafted a jam-packed episode of the Tuesday night delight, but not finding even three minutes to devote to Breezango is a mistake. Taking its foot off the pedal and allowing The Fashion Police to slink back into mediocrity would be an enormous mistake and one SmackDown Live is not known for making.
