US Open Golf 2017: How to View Thursday's Live Leaderboard Scores, Updates

Tom SunderlandJun 15, 2017

Golf greats will gather at Erin Hills in Wisconsin this week as the 117th edition of the U.S. Open gets under way, and Dustin Johnson looks to become the first player since 1989 to top the leaderboard two years in a row.

Curtis Strange was the last person to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles, but Johnson is arguably the best in the world right now, meaning he is in prime position to break a duck stretching back almost three decades.

Jordan Spieth won this tournament in 2015 and also returns as a top contender to excel, and the United States has the chance to clinch three U.S. Open winners three years running for the first time since 1998-2000.

As far as foreign front-runners go, 2011 champion Rory McIlroy returns stateside after taking three top-10 finishes in PGA Tour contests this year, while Masters winner Sergio Garcia is seeking his second major of 2017.

Erin Hills is something of an unknown quantity as it prepares to host its first U.S. Open, meaning we could witness plenty of movement on the leaderboard between Thursday's first round and Sunday's end.

Visit the competition's official website or PGATour.com to view the latest leaderboard updates.

Fox and Fox Sports 1 will offer coverage of the tournament in the United States, and fans can live-stream the action via USOpen.com and Fox Sports Go. Sky Sports will broadcast the event to United Kingdom audiences, who can also live-stream via the Sky Go app.

Still just 23 years of age and frequently showcasing maturity beyond his years, Spieth stands out at another major as one of the heavyweights amid a busy 2017, during which he's participated in 14 PGA Tour competitions.

However, after mustering three top-10 finishes and one win in his first four tournaments of 2017, the youngster has either finished outside the top 10 or failed to make the cut in eight of his last 10 contests.

He finds himself in a similar position to McIlroy when he stormed to U.S. Open glory in Bethesda, Maryland, six years ago, although the Northern Irishman's run-up to Erin Hills this week has been disrupted by unforeseen circumstances.

One of the major talking points in preparation for Thursday's tee-off has been the United States Golf Association's (USGA) call to shorten the rough following complaints from players.

Englishman Lee Westwood took the setting more in his stride than some:

However, McIlroy didn't see the funny side after the rough was trimmed down as a result of some players' reaction, and he held the position that different venues come with different obstacles, via Fox Sports:

The important thing to note is that regardless of how long the grass is, every player will be competing on the same field, and McIlroy now needs to put all distractions to one side if he's to add a second title to his collection.

Although Spieth is too young to have a successor, Spaniard Jon Rahm would be dubbed it should one have to name golf's biggest emerging starlet.

The 20-year-old comes to Erin Hills hoping to win the U.S. Open crown after being named best amateur in the 2016 tournament, although recent form hasn't helped his preparation this year.

Inconsistency in recent months has been Rahm's main concern, but after PGA Tour broadcaster Luke Ely detailed his poor showing at the Memorial Tournament at the beginning of June, he may be due a good performance:

Sleepers to watch in this year's U.S. Open include Alex Noren, who sealed his second top-10 finish of 2017 at the Players' Championship last month, as well as Swedish compatriot and world No. 6 Henrik Stenson.

If they take to Erin Hills, either one of Rahm or McIlroy could make a strong case to sweep the leaderboard this year, but the consistent class of Johnson and Spieth will make them the men to beat in this competition.
