Steve Scalise Shot During Practice for Congressional Baseball Team in Alexandria
United States House of Representatives majority whip Steve Scalise was shot Wednesday morning during practice for the congressional baseball team in Alexandria, Virginia.
Alabama representative Mo Brooks told Karl de Vries and Eugene Scott of CNN.com, Scalise seemed to have been shot in the hip, and two Capitol Hill police agents were reportedly shot as well.
Alexandria Police tweeted after the shooting that a suspect was in custody and "not a threat."
Per de Vries and Scott, sources called the shooting a "deliberate attack."
President Donald Trump tweeted about the shooting, saying that Scalise will fully recover:
CNN's Twitter account shared Brooks' account of events on Wednesday morning:
Brooks described using his belt as a tourniquet to aid one of the victims and said that he took cover behind a batting cage wrapped in plastic during the shooting while others scattered on the ground.
In an interview with CNN's New Day, Brooks discussed the fact that it isn't a secret when the congressional baseball team practices, making it possible to plan an attack:
CNN also tweeted video of a helicopter arriving on the scene following the shooting:
Upon news of the shooting breaking, the New Orleans Saints tweeted a message of support for Scalise:
The 51-year-old Scalise is a Republican who represents the state of Louisiana, and he has served in that role since 2008.
