Jason Peters Says He Wants to Restructure Eagles Contract, Retire with Team

Joseph ZuckerJun 13, 2017

After he missed OTAs earlier this month, Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jason Peters said he's open to restructuring his current deal with an eye toward winding down his NFL career.

"I want to retire here," Peters told reporters Tuesday. "I don't want to go year to year."

Peters also said he doesn't plan on holding out through Eagles minicamp.

The 35-year-old told reporters he's looking for more financial security, per ESPN.com's Tim McManus. According to Over the Cap, he's signed through 2018 with a combined $20.45 million in base salaries, but none of that money is guaranteed.

Peters has spent the last eight years in Philadelphia and started 104 games during that time. Pro Football Focus' Eliot Crist showed how his performance fell slightly in 2016 relative to the three previous years:

While he has been a stalwart on the Eagles offensive line, Peters' current contract would make it easy for them to release him if they want to go in a different direction.

The Eagles would save $9.7 million against $2 million in dead money by cutting him before the start of the 2017 season, and they'd save $10.25 million if they released him next offseason.

Considering Peters' willingness to work with Philadelphia in order to amend his contract, the two sides should be able to reach an agreement that could provide him with more guaranteed money while simultaneously easing his burden on the Eagles' salary cap.
