Evander Holyfield Among International Boxing Hall of Fame Inductees
The International Boxing Hall of Fame inducted its 2017 class Sunday.
Evander Holyfield was the most notable addition to the Hall of Fame. He shared a photo of the ring he received for the honor:
"This Hall of Fame thing is all about the help I got from someone else," Holyfield said at his induction ceremony, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com). "My mom wouldn't let me quit."
Holyfield's legendary career lasted into four different decades. He debuted in November 1984 and last fought in May 2011. Between that time, the 54-year-old became one of the best heavyweights in the world.
Holyfield had a memorable trilogy with Riddick Bowe, with Bowe prevailing in the first and third of their bouts. Holyfield also engaged in a memorable rivalry with Mike Tyson that ended with Tyson biting Holyfield's ear during their June 1997 fight.
Marco Antonio Barrera and Johnny Tapia joined Holyfield as part of the 2017 Hall of Fame class. Barrera and Tapia fought in November 2002, with the former earning a unanimous decision.
Like Holyfield, a trio of fights with Erik Morales helped grow Barrera's legend in the ring. Barrera also clashed with Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, losing unanimous decisions to the pair in 2007.
Tapia, who died in 2012, won titles in three different divisions: super flyweight, bantamweight and featherweight.
The 2017 class also included Eddie Booker, broadcasters Steve Farhood and Barry Tompkins, judge Jerry Roth, trainer Johnny Lewis and ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Sr.
