College Baseball Regionals 2017: Texas A&M Tops Houston in Monday's Play

Rob GoldbergJun 5, 2017

College baseball teams across the country will see their season come to an end Monday as the regional round of the NCAA tournament wraps up.

While six teams entered the day having already earned a spot in the super regionals, nearly ever other position will be filled by the end of the fourth day of action. There is still a long way to go before one team can call themselves national champions, but you can't get there without first surviving the opening rounds.

Here is the latest schedule and results from each regional, with a full bracket available at NCAA.com.

Notable Results

Texas A&M 4, Houston 3

Although Houston provided a bit of a scare in the ninth inning, Texas A&M held on to win the regional.

Stephen Kolek was the star of the day, pitching 8.1 innings with just two runs allowed, one of them earned.

Colin Deaver of KAGS News gave his thoughts on the performance:

Kolek entered the ninth inning with a 4-0 lead, although it took three different pitchers to escape the ninth. Cason Sherrod finally closed things out with a strikeout to secure the 4-3 win.

Texas A&M controlled most of the game as Blake Kopetsky's two-run, two-out single in the first inning provided the underdogs with an early advantage. Kopetsky, who finished with two hits in the win, made an impact in the field as well with this outstanding catch in the bottom of the inning:

This likely prevented a run with a player on second base at the time.

The Aggies added insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings, the latter being a pinch-hit home run from Baine Schoenvogel.

While a Corey Julks home run keyed a comeback attempt for Houston in the bottom of the ninth, they couldn't get the tying run across.

Texas A&M will now move on to the super regionals to take on Davidson in a matchup of surprising contenders.

Sam Houston State 4, Texas Tech 3

While not as big of an upset as Davidson over North Carolina, Sam Houston State continued the surprises in the NCAA tournament by advancing to the super regionals.

The Bearkats used five pitchers to hold Texas Tech to just three runs, and then scratched and clawed for their own scores to come away with the narrow win.

The NCAA Baseball account provided a look at the celebration after the game-winning strikeout:

Hunter Hearn was the star of the day at the plate while responsible for all four runs. He drove two in and scored two himself, including the eventual game-winner off an error in the sixth inning.

Although Hunter Hargrove had three hits and a run for Texas Tech, it wasn't enough to keep his team's season alive.

Sam Houston State beat No. 2 Arizona twice and No. 1 Texas Tech twice in the regional round, becoming the only team from the Southland Conference to advance in this tournament. It will take on the winner of Florida State and Auburn.

Florida 6, Bethune-Cookman 1

Bethune-Cookman was able to beat Florida in the last game to force a winner-take-all battle, but fell short in the rematch.

Austin Langworthy was the clear star of the day, making an impact in all sorts of ways. He was the starting pitcher and came through with just one run and two hits allowed in four innings.

Of course, he was only getting started. He also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, all of which coming on this confident three-run homer:

Nelson Maldonado helped out offensively with three hits and an RBI, while Michael Byrne and Kirby McMullen combined for five shutout innings out of the bullpen to close out the win.

The Gators didn't have their top starters available but still found a way to survive in their biggest game of the season, which bodes well for the rest of their tournament.

Florida will now take on Wake Forest in the super regional.

Florida State 6, Auburn 0

Will Zirzow lifted Florida State to a victory in the regional final over Auburn.

In just his fourth start of the season, the junior pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and no runs in nine innings. He also added 11 strikeouts with zero walks.

The Seminoles scored two runs in the first inning, which represented the only scoring in the game until the seventh. They were then able to add some insurance runs in the next three innings to pull away from Auburn.

Steven Wells went 2-for-2 with a home run off the bench, while Dylan Busby and Jackson Lueck added two hits each to key the offense.

Still, only one run was needed based on the incredible pitching from Zirzow. Corey Clark of the Tallahassee Democrat summed up the performance:

Florida State advances to face Sam Houston State in the next round.

Long Beach State 2, Texas 1

Six pitchers combined to allow just four hits and one run for Long Beach State on Monday night, as it squeaked by Texas 2-1 to advance to the super regionals.

The 49ers jumped on Longhorns starter Nick Kennedy early, as they tagged him for four hits, one walk and two runs in 2.2 innings, leading to an early exit.

That 2-0 lead was cut down to 2-1 in the fifth when Texas scored on a wild pitch by Long Beach State reliever Connor Riley, but the 49ers' bullpen was virtually unhittable from that point forward.

There wasn't a single RBI in the game, as all three runs were manufactured rather than driven in, but that was enough for the 49ers to survive as a No. 1 seed.

With momentum now firmly on its side, Long Beach State will move on to face CSU Fullerton in the super regionals.
