NASCAR at Dover 2017 Results: Jimmie Johnson Earns Win, Kyle Larson Finishes 2nd

Tyler ConwayJun 4, 2017

Martin Truex Jr. won the first two stages. Kyle Larson led the most laps. But it was Jimmie Johnson who won Sunday's 2017 AAA 400 Drive for Autism.

Johnson took home his 11th race at Dover under caution during overtime to beat out Larson and Truex, who finished second and third, respectively. The No. 48 was the beneficiary of a solid restart to the overtime period, which was cut short when Ty Dillon spun and caused a multi-car pile up.

NASCAR reviewed the tape and determined the leaders had gotten to the so-called "overtime line" before caution hit.

Johnson, 41, led just seven laps after beginning his day at the rear of the field due to a gear change. He was able to navigate his favorite track nonetheless, pushing his way up a wreckage-filled field. His second-place finish in the second stage helped set him up with Larson and Truex as contenders for the checkered flag.

Hendrick Motorsports sent out a tweet congratulating Johnson on his 83rd career win:

Race action was choppy affair for nearly the entire day, with cautions forcing things into a bit of a slog. The race was under yellow 15 different times, with The Monster Mile fully living up to its name.

Brad Keselowski and Kurt Busch both saw their days end early after a Lap 65 crash. Busch was battling Larson for the lead when his car got loose on the inside, forcing him up the track and into Keselowski.

"These cars rely so much on aerodynamics. We saw that early with guys being able to stay out on two tires even with a lot of tire wear," Keselowski said, per NASCAR.com. "I don't know if it was Kurt's fault, just one of them racing deals. We line up double-file and somebody got loose and just took us out. What a bummer. Just one of them racing deals."

Busch, who finished 37th after being involved in a second accident later in the race, took responsibility for taking out Keselowski.

"I got loose on a restart," Busch said. "It's my bad as a driver. My bad. We had good speed in our Haas Automation/Monster Energy Ford and just couldn't finish. You can't make mistakes out here and we did."

Truex led 68 of the 120 laps in the first stage, outlasting second-place Larson to earn the 10-point boost. Truex and Larson spent nearly the entire first stage battling for the lead, a trend that would continue for most of the race.

The No. 78 car took the second stage despite leading far fewer laps, with Johnson coming in second. Larson fell behind the field a bit due to an off-cycle pit stop, but his car was strong enough to muster a fifth-place finish.

In the end, Larson led a race-high 241 of the race's 406 laps. Truex led 102, and no other driver led more than 27.

"When you're disappointed with third, it speaks volumes about your team," Truex said, per Kaitlyn Vincie of Fox Sports 1.

Truex remains the overall points leader, sitting nine ahead of Larson. The pair have been the most dominant fixtures in NASCAR's top circuit all season, both sitting more than 100 points better than third-place Kevin Harvick.
