Conor McGregor's Coach Says He's Already Training for Floyd Mayweather Fight
While a potential fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn't yet set in stone, the UFC Lightweight champion is already preparing.
According to ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto, McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, said the Irishman is training for Mayweather:
"There could still be negotiations going on four weeks out, but the big mistake would be to mentally put off the heavy training until every detail is agreed upon. We are training now. We're ready for that date in the fall, whenever that might be. We'll let the lawyers and suits deal with the nuances of who gets this and who gets that. Conor is a fighter. I am his coach. We'll focus on the contest at hand."
UFC President Dana White recently said during an NBA on TNT postgame show (h/t MMAFighting.com) that McGregor's side of the deal was done.
There has been no public indication that Mayweather has come to terms yet, but the undefeated boxer said last week on Eminem's SiriusXM channel Shade 45 (h/t Mike Dyce of Fansided.com) that he is hopeful the bout comes to fruition:
"I mean, once I get back to Las Vegas, to my hub, we'll find out how everything plays out. You know, I'll communicate with Al [Haymon]. I'll communicate with Leonard Ellerbe. We'll sit down and see what we can come up with and hopefully the McGregor fight can be made."
Mayweather is a perfect 49-0 as a boxer, but the 40-year-old veteran has been retired since beating Andre Berto in 2015.
McGregor remains active in the combat sports world, and while the 28-year-old is 21-3 in MMA, he has never had a professional boxing match.
