Andre Dirrell's Uncle Leon Lawson Jr. Suspended for Jose Uzcategui Suckerpunch
Leon Lawson Jr., the trainer and uncle of Andre Dirrell, has been suspended by the Maryland State Athletic Commission after he sucker punched Jose Uzcategui following his nephew's win on May 20.
According to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, Lawson Jr. was slapped with an indefinite administrative suspension on May 23 for his outburst after Uzcategui was disqualified from the bout at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, for hitting Dirrell after the bell.
Showtime Boxing on Twitter relayed video of the moments that contributed to Dirrell's win by disqualification:
"The action was taken as a result of Mr. Lawson punching professional boxer Jose Uzcategui in the face following the conclusion of the boxing contest between Mr. Uzcategui and Andre Dirrell," Maryland State Athletic Commission executive director Patrick Pannella said in a statement, per Rafael. "The Maryland State Athletic Commission's suspension of Mr. Lawson was issued on an indefinite basis. The commission is continuing its investigation and takes this matter very seriously."
Dirrell, who is 26-2 (16 KOs) for his career, now holds the IBF super middleweight title by virtue of Uzcategui's disqualification.
As for Lawson, Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole reported on May 20 that he has been charged with first-and-second degree assault and faces up to a combined maximum of 35 years in prison if convicted.
"I’m very apologetic for what my coach has done," Dirrell said, per Iole. "But he loves me. You know, that’s my man; that’s my uncle; that’s my brother; that’s my coach. He cares about my well-being first. I don’t understand why he did that, because like I said, I feel fine. But these are the way the cards are dealt sometimes and I’ve got to deal with this."
