Hornets Trade Up to Select Dwayne Bacon No. 40 Overall in 2017 NBA Draft
Dwayne Bacon is headed to the Charlotte Hornets after the team selected him with the No. 40 pick of the 2017 NBA draft after the New Orleans Pelicans traded his rights, per ESPN.com.
The Hornets have been active on draft night, adding Malik Monk with the No. 11 pick and Frank Jackson with the No. 31 pick.
Here's how the addition of Bacon to the rookie mix in Charlotte was received on social media:
Bacon is a pure scorer who should have a chance of entering the rotation right away and making a positive impact.
The Florida State star first burst onto the scene with an average of 15.8 points per game as a freshman before improving to 17.2 PPG this past season as a sophomore. He was the leading scorer on a squad that finished second in the ACC.
At 6'6 ¼" with good athleticism and ball-handling ability, he is best when attacking the basket. He can penetrate into the lane almost at will and consistently finish around the net. Adding in his length and versatility, Bacon can develop into an above-average defender who can match up against multiple positions at the next level.
"I definitely feel like I'm ready to make a day-one impact in the NBA," he said, per Alex Kennedy of Hoops Hype. "...I can give a team whatever they need right now."
One area he will have to work on is his outside shooting after making just 31.2 percent of his three-pointers over his two years in college. He can make an open look if given the opportunity, but he will need to be a much bigger threat from beyond the arc if he wants to succeed at the NBA level.
While he has the physical tools to be a good defender, he also will need to improve his focus on that end of the court.
He might need some time before reaching his potential, but Bacon can contribute immediately with his scoring ability. Down the road, he could become an impact player for a Hornets team that finished 14th in offensive efficiency last season, per Basketball-Reference.com.
